I've recently been interested in playing DOS games. The game I chose to play first is The Simpsons - Barts House of Weirdness. It's one of the few games I remember playing on my brother's old PC back in the day. So I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the game itself wouldn't install. I followed a YouTube video tutorial I found here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=52802 … earch&plindex=1

It was very useful. Unfortunetely, the game I tried to run wasn't Doom. Still, I assumed the steps would work with all other DOS games. I followed those steps found in the tutorial to the letter, which were easy, but I couldn't get beyond the 'install' bit. Here's what I did:

-downloaded the latest DOSBox version and installed it
-couldn't figure out for the life of me what to do with it, so I Google/Video searched it
-followed the steps used in the video link above

-launched DOSBox
-typed in (without quotes) - "mount c c:\DOSGAMES" then hit enter <Right before I did that, I did make a directory of DOSGAMES within the C drive
-typed in "c:" then hit enter
-typed in "dir" then hit enter, where I saw the contents of the game, which I had extracted into the DOSGAMES directory earlier
-typed in "install", and that's where I got stuck. It told me that it's an illegal command.

I sent a message to the person who made that video, and he suggested I check the compatability of the Bart game at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ I did so, and it said version 0.62 works with it. Now, I was unsure if it meant that the game itself will only work with that version of DOSBox, or it's been compatible with DOSBox since version 0.62. Either way, I downloaded the latest version, along with 0.62, and I keep getting stuck at the 'install' part. Can someone help me here?

As for the specs of this PC, I just know some general information, not complete details. I hope that's enough to help.

do a dir command after changing to c:

Maybe the game doesn't need installing or its executable has a different name.

I'm, not following. =\ I type in the dir command after typing in c:

It shows me the games files and such, but the install bit doesn't work. I noticed the game itself has about 4 executable files. One of which is called setup.

The install program will usually be called either Install.exe or Setup.exe. I can think of very, very few instances in which that wasn't the case.

Try out these frontends, create profiles and you're off.

D.O.G.
DBGL

Also some pointers:
Mount a directory to wich the game needs to be installed to, as C:\ and a CD-rom if needed as D:\.
Use the SoundBlaster as a first, Gravis as a second.
For the rest set the CPU to dynamic and the Cycles to max.
Also don't use "install" but use the complete filename if the short doesn't work. If in doubt use the dir command.

See the dosbox.conf file if you want to do it without a frontend.

Wild, so....I should just double click on the setup.exe file, and that'll automatically install/run the game?

Erik, thanks. I'll check out DBGL also.

Sorry you're faster then me, had edited my post.

The frontends just take away any complexity. So no more shortnames and so on.
The frontends need to be started and then you create a profile for the software you want to start. After installing create a new profile for the installed exe.

Nevermind. I found another frontend called RobyDosBox, which seems to work without any complications. I didn't think I'd find myself enjoying these old DOS games. 🤣 Thank you all for your help.
