I'm probabl being lazy, as usual, but privateer is busting my nuts cause being a WC fan (or in this case a bad one) and not having ever played this game makes me feel cold all over. First problem was the game trying to get me to callibrate TWO joysticks. I use a microsoft sidewinder pro. Something to do with all the buttons i guess. Any ideas? 😒

Privateer in pure DOS? I use a Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro (best dos joystick ever!) and it works perfectly for all my games, including Privateer.
Still, Privateer along with Strike Commander is looking for a joystick two at the start of the game. But this has become my secondary problem for the time being as privateer has STOPPED working for no apparent reason and is looking for more memory.
Are you on DOSBox or real hardware?

Install the game within dosbox.
This error is caused by a bad directory structure.
Specifically, missing sound drivers (ie data\sound\*.drv)
As wd says, install the game in DOSBox and it should work just fine.

Well getting from "install the game" to "it can't find some files if it is
installed incorrectly" isn't that hard imo (the why).
