I'm trying to hack the text hex in some old NES games on a Mac. I have DOSBox successfully running on an Intel Macbook, and have installed hexecute and romedit without any problems- I can't figure out how to load NES ROMS into the program I'm running in DOSbox. Is this even possible?

Is there a way to get from A to B without going through CDEF and the usual panoply of alphabetics?

Why the f.... do you want to involve DOSBox in this? Surely there must be some native Mac program to edit (binary) files?

You just need to mount the directory that contains your ROM files in addition to mounting your Hexecute and Romedit directories, of course.

But I would think there would indeed be some better options at this point. Tile Molester, maybe?

If you are using a recent version of OS X, you have a copy of vim installed by default. This includes the 'xxd' binary for converting data to hex and back.

1. Open your file in vim using this command (YOU MUST USE THE -B FLAG):
vi -b <file>
2. To convert a file to hex inside vim, execute this command:
%!xxd
3. Proceed with editing...
4. To go back to binary mode, use this command:
%!xxd -r

Done!

What does this have to do with DOS? Shouldn't it be in the Console & Arcade forum?

no because he is using DOSbox to run his dos-based application. It is irrelevant what the application does.
Mounting the rom-directory will solve this problem and make the actuall files available inside the dosbox enviroment.
