Is there anyone out there who has gotten Amtex's Eight Ball Deluxe to work? (Beside "oldmike", who is not responding.) I wonder if you would share your DosBox configuation with me? I am an experienced middle-aged programmer (i.e., I actually used DOS on my IBM PC XT), so you don't need to use baby talk. But I am confused about how to get EBD going.

I have DosBox installed, and I have the EBD files in a directory on my C: drive. So I start DosBox
DosBox c:\games\8ball2
and then when I get the DosBox C prompt, I execute
8balldlx.exe
But then it freezes.

FYI, I also have the original EBD diskettes.

Some problems but its working, you will see much ball/flipper transparency/flicker with cpu cycles that are too low, monster rig is advised for this one 😉

Well it's a more a problem with the vga emulation that the screen is drawn to quickly and games thinking they still have some time before the lower half of the screen still needs to get drawn

Yeah On a real pc the drawing of the screen is process that takes time.
Dosbox draws the screen at once but keeps the virtical retrace active for the time the drawing takes on a real pc. (else many games mess up)
So games wait for the virtical retrace wait half a period and change the pallet. or change other things.

In dosbox this doesn't work as the sreen isn't updated any more

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

So,
If the processor is fast enough, game has enough time to draw things
correctly during the vertical retrace. If not, it uses time during screen drawing.
That explains why raising cpu cycles helps.

Hmm, wouldn't it, in some cases, help to draw complete screen at the end of the drawing period?
(only if game doesn't alter the upper part of the screen in similar fashion)

So, Qbix, if i understood it correctly, you mean VSYNC is always off under DOSBox. That might explaing some nasty tearing i was getting.
