Uncle Henry's Playhouse and/or Puzzle Madness

These are to answer the questions at Follow These Guidelines When Submitting Help Requests

1. Motherboard: Dell?
2. Processor type and speed: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.60 GHz
3. Amount and type of RAM: 3.59 GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM
4. Video board w/ RAM amount and type: Intel?
5. Sound board: SoundMAX Digital Audio?
6. Operating system: Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
7. Game name (and version, if applicable): Uncle Henry’s Playhouse (For Windows 95) from Puzzle Madness (2002 CD)
8. Description of problem (be detailed: saying "it's jerky" doesn't help, saying "the player sprites seem to be jerky when I'm pressing any of the arrow keys" does): My very detailed description is here: http://www.t7g3.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=18071#18071
9. Reproducibility of problem (always, only once, always but only on a specific level, etc.): It keeps on happening with the title menu shrunk down to the top fourth of the screen and garbled when I try to run it in Windows without DOSBox.
10. Sound mode used: SoundMAX Digital Audio?
11. Video mode (Software, OpenGL, Direct3D, or Glide, and resolution): COMPAQ 1024 on Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family, set at 1024 by 768 pixels, at 32-bit
12. Version of emulator (for VDMSound, probably 2.0.4 or 2.1.0; for DOSBox, 0.58+) : DOSBox 0.74 (I don’t understand how to run a Win 95 game in DOSBox. How do you do this? Win 95 is based on DOS. )
13. Steps already attempted to solve the problem (please say you've read the README if you haven't, and READ IT IF YOU HAVEN'T!) : Which Readme? The DOSBox one or the Henry one? The DOSBox Readme at http://dosbox.cvs.sourceforge.net/dosbox/dosb … DME?view=markup isn’t helpful for a Win 95 game. I’ve read the Uncle Henry’s Playhouse Readme in the 401 MB zip file that I’ve uploaded at http://www.wolfensteingoodies.com/scg/PuzzleMadness.zip . But if you want only the Henry Readme file, it’s here: http://www.wolfensteingoodies.com/scg/win95/l … ness/README.DOC

I have a question. Is Uncle Henry’s Playhouse or Puzzle Madness now abandonware? If it isn’t, then I’ll delete the link this week.

I hope I’m not forgetting anything else.

I spent more hours looking into this. I typed emulate a win 95 game into a search engine and this was one of the links that came up: http://www.classicdosgames.com/utilities/win9x.html . What do you think about these utilities? But do I need a boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com/ ? It’s 10:20 pm here. I’ll read your responses tomorrow and/or try the utilities at classicdosgames.com .

Look at the menu from 0:00 to 0:17 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y101fPfGsY4 . Imagine it scrunched up into the top fourth of the screen and garbled up. That’s what the error looked like when I tried to run it in Windows. I will get a Youtube account this week and message bloodyAries asking how he emulated it.

You don't, period. Windows 95 may be based on DOS, but that does not mean you can run any random Windows 95 application in DOS, and certainly not in DOSBox. As such, I am not clear why you are posting this in a DOSBox forum as your question has nothing to do with DOSBox.

While it is possible to actually install Windows 95 within DOSBox and then run Windows 95 games in Windows 95 in DOSBox, this is generally not advisable. If that is what you need to do, then you should try a virtual machine such as VirtualBox, VMware Player, or Virtual PC.

I have a question. Is Uncle Henry’s Playhouse or Puzzle Madness now abandonware?

If you're asking if it can be legally distributed, then the answer is nearly always no.

Please tell me more.

Sir, if that’s the way you feel then I just took the 401 MB zip file off of my web space. You have over 2100 posts in over 9 years and I believe that you know what you’re talking about.

Threads abound and Google is also quite informative. See for instance Please explain about virtual machines .

A virtual machine is exactly what the name implies: it functions as a virtual computer, complete with its own virtual hardware and virtual hard drive. A virtual machine thus allows you to, for instance, run Windows 98 in a window while Windows XP runs in the background. In order to do so you would need your own copy of Windows 98, or you would need to download one from somewhere. While virtual machines currently have limited support for 3D hardware, that is unlikely to be needed for an application such as Uncle Henry's Playhouse.

Thank you.

I have to leave to go work my lunch shift in a few minutes. I'll fish around for my old Windows 98 CDs because we never had Windows 95. I'll respond in a day or 2 about how things worked out.

Just wondering, who is the penguin from your avatar? He almost looks like Sparky from “This Modern World” animations from mondominishows.com in 2000-2001. In the animations, he complained about Bush and Gore running against each other and became Ralph Nader’s running mate. He’s now at http://thismodernworld.com/ . For mysterious reasons, he wore the visor from LeVar Burton from Star Trek: The Next Generation and nobody except me seemed to have wondered why.

OK, I’ve found my old Win 98 CD and what appears to have been my Dad’s old Win 95 CD. Now I’ll look for tutorials for VirtualBox, VMware Player, or Virtual PC in the mean time while I’m waiting for you to respond.

Precisely. In this strip (I forget which one, exactly) he is firing an Ironic Punishment Ray in a superhero comic parody. I had never heard of the animated series before; the strip has been drawn since 1988 (wiki).

You might as well stick with Windows 98; it is unlikely that Windows 95 will prove superior. Tutorials abound.

I basically bought the game compilation CD this year because nobody at t7g3.com had put up a video of the last level nor uploaded the saved game states. TangoBunny was able to very recently record a video at http://t7g3.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3144 of the exclusive last puzzle getting beaten. She said that if my copy of the Puzzle Madness compilation CD from 2002 doesn’t load, but her Uncle Henry’s Playhouse CD from 1996 runs in Windows 7 then it’s probably because of my Puzzle Madness CD.

All of the other puzzles in the Henry game are in The 7th Guest, The 11th Hour, and Clandestiny. I’ve gotten The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour working in DOSBox. I haven’t bought Clandestiny from Ebay yet. Thank you for all your help.

Yesterday was December 31 and I tried to remember if there’s anybody whom I’ve forgotten to message from over the year. I had forgotten to tell you since my previous post that I had found my sister’s and her husband’s old Windows 95 computer that was almost dropped off at recycling. Uncle Henry’s Playhouse works on it.
