I have two Super socket 7 motherboards that won't post.
Nothing, I hooked up a PC Diagnostic reader and get no readings.
No video output.
I only get keyboard lights check and that's it.
I am using an ATX power supply.
I tried several CPU's and ram configurations with no success.
I tried several jumper settings with no success
I tried all the BIOS jumper settings with no success.
The motherboard appears to be getting power it just stops working after keyboard check.

They are FIC VA-503+ motherboards.
Here is a link to the manual.

Change the "POWER" jumper to use the ATX connector.
Its the one on the "back" side of the board just above the BIOS chip.

And if your board is anything like mine you'll need a recap =)

I am using ATX jumper setting.
I am going to have to buy a de-soldering gun.

I am using the remote power switch jumper(RPW_SW) on the motherboard to power on the computer.

Ah, assumed you used the settings from the pics.

I'ts just caps, a regular cheapo pump will do.
Then again proper tools makes it so much more enjoyable =)

BTW, my board posted just fine with like 50% of the caps obviously bulging.
Also what mem did you try ? i know I got quite far into my pile of SDRAM before i found one that was stable.
128MB is max per stick, but you knew that I'm sure.

Are all the other parts known working?

Any yeah.. the 503+ is really finicky about what RAM it likes.

Well the motherboard manual reads it accepts 128mb and 256mb DIMM's.
I tried some PC-100 ram. I don't know the amount but it could not have been more than 128mb sticks.
I also tried some PC-133 ( 256mb DIMM's ).

Thats all I have on hand.

Will one stick work or do I need two sticks installed ?

I have my SDRAM ( DIMM freq. ) settings for 100mhz. I don't see a setting for 133mhz.

One will do just fine.
Just a thought, tried without KB connected ?

And theres no setting for 133MHz.
Memory runs at bus-speed or at 2/3 of the bus-speed, IIRC its the CLK4 jumper (?).
Setting 2/3 would make it more stable if the caps are less then perfect.

Which ROM setting would you assume is correct ?

Okay. I tried different types of ram PC-100, PC-133 DIMMS, FPM amd EDO Simms too.
Nothing seems to make the motherboard posts.
So I will have to take a close look at these motherboards with a magnifying glass and a digital multi meter.
And see if I can find the problem.

Any Idea where to look ?

The FiC board can be a pain in the ass, I don't like the jumper placement on them...simply confusing in some areas. Performancewise it is likely the fastest mvp3 board especially if you are lucky to have the 2mb version.

I had several boards in the past (different brands) that didn't wanna go with an ATX psu but started right up with an AT, I would try that first.

About the bios chip: look at the last three digits, if any of those three is a 1 it is most likely a 1mbit chip. If one of the three is a 2 it is most likely a 2mbit chip.

About the searching for probable damage: Damaged traces or legs/pins on chips can be found but there might as well be some inside damage on chips etc. also check inside every slot if everything looks fine. Also try another type of cpu with different voltage. Check every single jumper cap, there might be some corrosion preventing a good connection etc. etc.

Made theese pics for myself when i got tired of scrolling a PDF everytime I wanted to change something.
Might aswell share them here:

Could add the mem 1:1 / 2:3 on CLK4, but once set its probably OK "forever" =)

Hope you get yours up and running !

Well, I am not a motherboard repair professional so I am learning as I go.
This will be my first complete recap job.
I performed a close inspection of the motherboard and did not see any signs of physical damage.
The caps look good but when I tested them with a multi-meter some had very low readings.
Since they need to be replaced anyways I might as well start there.

Anyone know how to properly diagnose these old Socket 7 motherboards with a digital multi meter ?
I could not find any videos on YouTube for diagnosing and repairing old socket 7 motherboards.
Lots of videos on recapping but none on diagnosing socket 7 motherboards.

You will have to remove the sticker on the BIOS chip to see which exact type it is. It's the large DIP chip on the lower left, with the golden AWARD sticker on it. Just peel that sticker off.

Okay, I checked. I have the 1mb MXIC chip.

Yes, I got it to post but It will only run at 66mhz x 5.5 for 366mhz.
I am using a K6-3+450mhz CPU. With a 2.2v. Core and 3.3v I/O.

What am I doing wrong?
Why won’t it post with 100mhz CPU external bus frequency ?
Only 66mhz appears to work.

Not saying that it is.
But bad caps could very well be the problem.

BTW did you try 100MHz FSB and 66 MHz memory ?

And I notised the "JE439" bios version.
J4333 is probably the latest, thats what I'm using.
That could also be a culprit.
Available here.
Wouldnt flash an unstable system tho, got another CPU to try?

I think i just need a bios rom update.
This bios is old and does not even display the correct cpu type.

Does anyone know where I can download the latest bios rom ?

Just try a bootCD and run a few tests.
If its stable you should be OK to flash.
And hopefully that solves it.
I mean the CPU is obviously not ID'ed correctly.
Tho your RAM seems to be fine.
