Been screwing around with a 5.25" FDD I got a bit ago and seemingly no matter what jumper settings or physical order on the cable I cannot get this drive to even try to read anything. It does that seek test thing during/after POST just fine but when I go to try to read something it doesn't even sound like it's spinning up. There might be some combination of jumpers I'm missing, so I'd like to see if anyone else has anything before I declare it dead/incompatible with my system.

It's running on a
- GA-6BXC Rev 1.7 (flashed with powerleap BIOS)
- Via C3 Ezra-T 1.0AGHz
- 128(?) MB RAM
- FreeDOS 1.3

The 3.5" FDD I have on the same cable works fine both before and after the twist. The 5.25" fails to work when set to anything other than DS1 (on a 0-3, setting it to 0 makes it seek at the same time as the 3.5" drive)

Searching anything leads me to other 'drive not ready' problems, but never anything including the "dos area" part

Win98+DOS: C3 Ezra-T 1.0AGHz / P3-S 1.26GHz, 128MB RAM, AWE64 + Orpheus + Audigy 2 ZS, Ti 4200, 128GB SD card
Win XP SP3: C2Q 9650, 4GB RAM, X-Fi Titanium, GTX 750
PowerMac G4 QS 800MHz + GeForce4 Ti4200, OS 9
PowerMac G5 DP 1.8Ghz + ATi x800 XT, Leopard

Most all 3.5" newer drives have no jumpers and are locked at DS1 to be used at end of the cable. Yeah the B drive should be set a DS1 and put before the twist.
Does the drive have well labeled jumpers ? Or are they just numbered ? The HD, MM and DCH should all be jumpered, some controllers/OS do not like HD jumped so LD should be jumped if HD fails.
This post has some info but not sure if correct: http://www.verycomputer.com/74_932f9b5979e89b95_1.htm.
This post has info and he said it worked with jumpers set that way....https://www.bamsoftware.com/computers/floppies/index.html

added: have not been able to find many original jumper settings for early Mitsumi 5.25" floppies. If anyone has any please let me know, thanks !

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner, I thought I'd get notified if someone responded without clicking the button to actually do that.

The jumpers are well listed, if a bit cramped. Just a bit hard to see what's what since its under some top shielding. I think the only thing I haven't tried is setting it to LD so I guess I'm off to do that

Good luck ! Yeah the auto notify on a Quote+reply here seems a bit off sometimes. Usually it shows up on top right at the Bell but have noticed not always..

Jumpers didn't work, motor doesn't even try no matter if its on motor select or drive select so I think it's toast. The FD-55B I just slapped in there works fine and I have now discovered that the 5.25" floppies I have are probably 1.2MB, which it can't read being a 360k drive :p

ah well
