I bought a USB header to USB header to USB port adapter and it has an interesting component. In addition to the standard cable for USB but there is a second cable that appears to be keyed for a USB header and will fit onto one but appears to do nothing. It connects to four LED which I thought would be a status indicator for activity but nothing lights up on them no matter what I do with the connected devices.

My best guess is that this is a special adapter for an MSI motherboard and the LED connector is meant to fit into some other connector that will light the LEDs. What's confusing is that it's keyed for USB but I'm guessing that this was a cost savings measure.

Does anyone have any information about what this was meant to pair with?

The mainboard comes with a JLED1 connector for you to connect to D-
Bracket™. D-Bracket™ is a USB Bracket integrating four LEDs and allows
users to identify system problem through 16 various combinations of LED
signals. For definitions of 16 signal combinations, please refer to Chapter 1. D-
Bracket™.

Looks like it's a 16 stage POST indicator.

I have one on my MSI K8N Neo Platinum. It gives you boot status codes that correspond to the LED patterns shown in the user manual.

Combo USB and IR brackets for IRDA were a thing too, but those don't look like IR so I guess the above applies.

I have one of those, which came with a pile of other junk. There are apparently two versions, "D-Bracket" and "D-Bracket 2".

ETA: The difference between them is that one supports USB 2.0 and the other doesn't.

Board with D-Bracket 2: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/704743/Msi- … -X.html?page=35

Is this too much voodoo?
