Hello folks! Thank you in advance for your help.

I am running this exact 486 motherboard: https://www.ultimateretro.net/en/motherboards/1041

According to the jumper settings, this motherboard supports the Pentium Overdrive 83mhz CPU.
I've recently obtained such a CPU but am experiencing some odd behavior at system boot:

  • The system posts properly
  • When it counts the system memory, it stops short of counting all of it, by approximately 512kb (there is 64mb total)
  • I noticed that when it's counting the memory, it's slower than if it had the 486 DX2 CPU
  • After counting the memory and falling slightly short, it notifies me as expected of a memory size mismatch and to press F1 to continue
  • Pressing F1 to continue results in a black screen and the system doesn't move past that

I have it set to 66mhz clock speed and 33mhz FSB. There's a CPU type jumper setting and it's set for 486 DX2, which so happens to be the same for the POD CPU (according to https://www.ultimateretro.net/en/motherboards/1041).

Has anyone seen this type of behavior and have anything to suggest?

Thank you!
Tony

Try a bios update.

Maybe try jumping wt/wb pin. Perhaps cache isn’t working right.

Re: Socket 1/2/3 Tweaker (Alpha)

You can see a few pin mods here. See if any of them apply.

Is the revision of the board the same as in that picture?

Has the POD83 been verified working in another board?

You can try forcing it to a 1x multiplier by removing the fan.

Could also be flakey L2 cache or it might not like that specific RAM.

486 world was the wild west were all kinds of weird issues would pop up.
