Hi,

Does anyone know what these switches next to the processor do? - see photo

This is a Compaq Deskpro 486/33M processor board (part number 129127-001), but I cannot find any manual online that would answer the question…

My best guess is that they will allow me to select the voltage, bus speed or both, but have no ideia where to get confirmation…

The attachment A662A8B2-BCA2-44A9-94FE-1314DD16D967.jpeg is no longer available

Thanks in advance

Use correct spare part number on the processor card because there is several types of cards with these 3 dip switches.

https://www.ardent-tool.com/media/PS2_MOST/AC … PAQ/2005001.PDF

And you must rebuild that unobtainable power supply's capacitors and resolder cracked solder to prevent death. No longer obtainable and I was looking for one for almost two years and had to buy another deskpro/m computer with good PSU.

Cheers,

Cheers,

thanks for the info, I recently acquired a deskpro 486s/16m and haven't tested it yet, but was already wondering if I could set a 486dx2 on it.
now, I'll definitely look into the caps and cracked solder first .

Cheers,

129127-001 is the correct part number... unfortunately I cannot use it to find the information I need about the switches 😀 - happy to learn about any repository that may not be easily found by Google (or if anyone has the manual at home and would not mind to take a picture).

Mine has already displayed some weird behavior... I hope it is not caused by any hardware failure like cracked solder joints, but will probably have to dismantle it and take a look at it under a magnifying glass.

Did you look at the pdf he provided ?
129127-001 is listed with the 486/33
assembly 002319 & 002297
While it doesn't specifically mentions what each switch exactly is used for. The allowed combinations are listed.
Which for your board should be

486/33 Processor Board Switch Settings
(Assembly 002319 and 002297)
Processor S1 S2 S3
486/33 ON OFF ON
OD Replacement OD 66/100 OFF ON ON

from the photo you posted with the cyrix 486, I can understand why you think there might be an issue here.
If you have an original 486dx/33 or a 486dx2/66 you could try to verify if the problem lies with the cpu or some other hardware.

^This, plus you can still find the settings in the archived Compaq Tech Ref library - https://web.archive.org/web/19961226053450/ht … olume1/dpm.html

By the way, does any of you have any idea where the battery for this PC is located?

I cannot seem to find it anywhere... the last place to check would be the IO Board under the power supply...

Found it… it’s on the I/O board, under the Power supply.

Seems to be a Dallas DS1397.

The attachment C495C752-7E25-4CEF-A652-B6031A00BD3E.jpeg is no longer available

Anyone knows where I can find a new replacement for it (not NOS, as that is bound to have the battery drained as well)? Preferably one of those CR1220 battery adapters.

Cheers

If I get up to fixing my deskpro, I'll just do the dallas mod to it.
ie, remove it from its socket, find out which hidden pins have the battery attached, use my swiss army knife saw to reveal them to the outside world, disconnect the empty battery and attach a battery holder to it
then insert a battery in the battery holder and ... mount the dallas back in the socket.
😀

That won't function as a replacement for the DS1397 .

Here is something close enough to tutorial on how to modify DS1397:
http://greyghost.mooo.com/ds1397rework/

that's some clear info.

on a sidenote, does anyone know what the P6A (40pad) & P5A(34pad) & P4A(26pad) connectors are ?
one of them is the floppy connector, from the cable & devices attached in my machine, can't recall which one at the moment.
The others ... ? IDE & ... ?

ok, I looked and it's P4A, the 26 pad one that is the floppy connector.

Are you sure? Floppy connectors are 34pin and Parallel 26pin.

Yes, I am 100% sure. It's also not the first time that I've seen compaqs use a 26 pin connector on a floppy drive.
It also reminds me of the floppy drives with a flat cable connection which also tends to be 26 pins, wish I had known that little tidbit of info 20years ago in stead of 5.

edit: i'm not saying the 34 pad one isn't floppy also,it might be floppy or something else, perhaps for 5"1/4 drives, but the 3"1/2 drive is definitely connected to the 26pad one.

From top to bottom:

  • 3 1/2 Floppy Drive connector (includes power)
  • 5 1/4 Floppy Drive connector
  • IDE HDD Connector

Do you have original cables: power connectors assembly with 3 or 4 connectors to a orange edge connector?

Deskpro/M series uses 26 pin floppy drives and will only fit one way due to cables made this way.

Other connector that is 40 pins is for IDE, one edge connector and 40 pin connector.

I assume my cables are original but I don't really know. None of the connectors is orange though...
