I'm looking to change my Pentium 4 processor for a 65w processor, socket 775 and found that my P5S800-VM motherboard doesn't support the lower-consumption P4 processors (631, 641, 651, 661). My goal is to find a motherboard that has AGP and official support for Windows 98. On the cpu-upgrade site there is a huge list but it is difficult to figure out which one has AGP slot: "www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Pentium_ ... oards.html". Does anyone here have experience with any of these processors and know an AGP motherboard with Win98 support?

Hi there, i would personally recommend Asus P5PE-VM, revision 1.03G. This revision doesnt suffer from bulged caps around cpu like earlier ones. Excelent mATX board based on Intel 865G chipset, supporting not only Cedar mill P4s, but also Core 2 Duo up to X6800. I have this board coupled with Core 2 Duo 6700 and its absolute beast which can run Windows 98 natively. Board supports important legacy technologies - AGP, PCI, IDE and Floppy, but also has two SATA ports and 6x USB 2.0. Its capable of supporting 2x1GB of DDR400 RAM.

It's a hardware it's not compatible with 65w P4.

Do note it's specifically the D0 stepping variant that are 65W, the previous B1 and C1 stepping CPUs are 86W.

The mentioned Asus P5PE-VM doesn't list D0 stepping models as supported, only the 86W models.

Well remembered! I checked again, really it's not compatible

You can look up a mainboard here (checked with (2) P4 65nm Cedarmill or higher)
LGA 775 Motherboards with AGP Slots

P.S. Personally I would avoid i915 and NON AGP chipsets

I will cross-reference the data on this page with the cpu-upgrade site data, so I'll have a better chance of finding 775 AGP with 65w P4 support. If I find one I will only have to check if it has support for Windows 98

I found a model can suit, Asus P5VD1-X. On the Asus website there is the Via 4 in 1 driver for Windows ME and it will probably work fine on 98. AGP 8X, LGA775, 1066/800/533 MHZ, 4GB, gameport. It has AGP 8x and PCIE 16x slot, but PCIE works like 4x.

Those drivers are Win98 also. Though you can find VIA drivers just on VIATECH site

P.S. I don't know how useful the PCIEx4 is in Win98. Some people use it for a more powerful PCIE graphic card in Windows XP for dual-boot systems.
Also don't forget about Rloew's patches
