My second Logitech MX518 that I have bought for my KT7A rig is starting to malfunction (sensor randomly stops tracking for a moment, usually once every few minutes), and I have wondered about getting an active converter so I can use a modern USB gaming mouse (The MX518 is USB but also speaks PS/2 so I can use a passive adapter) that I hopefully can replace far less often (mice under 1600 dpi, or ball mice of any kind, are out of the question). One thing I'm concerned about, however, is input lag, since presumably there's a little computer in the middle translating one protocol to the other. Would this be a problem for fast-paced games like Doom and Quake? Are some models better than others in this regard? If there are models that provide performance nearly as good as a native PS/2 gaming mouse like the MX518, what are they?
