Hi guys!

I have this motherboard, which works with EDO RAM, but not with SDram. I don't know what model it is and in the engravings on the motherboard, I can't find anything to change the jumpers, in case that's what it is.

photo_15.jpg

The motherboard has 4 ISA and 3 PCI, 4 simm sockets and 1 sdram socket

I had a pentium 100 cpu installed, and I changed it for a pentium 200 cpu and changing the jumpers, I had no problem, but with the RAM I can't get it to work

Someone knows this motherboard or have a manual?

and yes, I had to modify the ODIN, because it didn't have a battery and it wouldn't start

It's not easy to identify anything from this photo, unless someone knows it well enough to recognize it instantly.

What DIMM exactly are you trying to use? These motherboards often only work with very early DIMMs and compatibility is questionable. If you have any 32 or 64MB/66MHz DIMM try with this first as a test

Next time you post a pic of POST screen, make sure you also have the bottom string in it, that gives info for a look up.
Model is the first string under the top right left logo.

The second photo shows the model. As Nexxen says, it's a DataExpert EXP8661

See my graphics card database at www.gpuzoo.com
Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

I have several modules. 128Mb.133mhz, 256MB 133mhz. 64Mb 100 mhz and 5 that I cannot identify the type. I'll try those.

Instead of randomly trying DIMMs, try to work from specs.

The board has an i430VX chipset, which most definitely supports SDRAM (and looks to have a 64MB SDRAM DIMM in it at the moment, although that could theoretically be an EDO DIMM), but it was the first chipset to do so and it's limited in terms of what it likes or not.

As a rule of thumb, it will always work with 16Mb chips, so 16MB DIMMs with 8 chips or 32MB DIMMs with 16 chips. It sometimes works with 64Mb chips, but don't count on it. Rated speed is irrelevant, in case of RAM it's just an indication of the maximum speed they can run at and this chipset only supports 66MHz, the slowest speed. You can run higher rated DIMMs on it without issues - so long as the actual chip size is supported.

So look up what kind of DIMMs you have there - if there are no clear specs or model IDs listed, just look up the datasheet of the chips used (search for the first line of code on the chip).

I fully agree with this. Boards with Intel VX were the very first boards to support SDRAM. Do you have 32MB DIMMs which are double sided?
With a very high probability you won't own such a DIMM, so it is a lot easier and cheaper to stick to EDO Simms 72pin.

EDIT: Cacheable area is 64MB for VX chipset, so don't upgrade to more than 64MB. So the best option is 2 times 32MB EDO. I think.

I took the first photo with that memory, but it didn't work. I have tried all the ones that I have not identified, and it does not show video with any of them, so, it is left with 64MB EDO in 4 modules, of 16MB. I understand that they may not be compatible with that motherboard.

Thanks again!

I also have a UNI-486WB board with a 486 SX at 25mhz and thanks to the website, I have also found the pdf manual

Anyway, as I said 64MB is the optimal configuration for the board, so when you have 4 times 16MB EDO working, it is perfect.

One more question, any PCI graphics card that works well? What could I look for?

Go for a S3 Trio64+ or S3 Virge 2MB variants are fine. Highly compatible for DOS stuff and fast enough for such kind of PC.
This machine is for DOS, is it correct?

It has an S3 Trio64 V+ with 2Mb.

Yes, it would mainly be for DOS, although I have installed Windows 98. I have a few games from that time that I was never able to play... haha. But they don't require much graphics (from the time, of course)

That's perfect for DOS, best compatibility and performance. Decent enough for 2D Windows stuff too, with desktop acceleration. For 3D a Voodoo(2) would be a great match, but not a cheap one...
