I have bought a copper heating for this cpu, and there’s a thermal pad on it. It’s used and quite frankly look beat up (the pad that is). Is the pad necessary the close the gap properly or is it ok to clean it off and then apply a little drop of good thermal paste on the cpu? Has anyone cracked a cpu not using the pad?

Usually it's better to clean off the pad and use paste, however there might be some groovy base, thick pad and wacky clamping mechanism combos out there where it might be wiser to stick with the pad without re-engineering the whole thing. So a picture of the heatsink might get you better advice.

In general, the PIII dies are quite tough and very few got killed in comparison to AMD K7 class ones, and those were particularly vulnerable to backwards HSF mounting, and the screw down Orb type coolers. So double check orientation, hold in place while clamping and it should be fine.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
