I picked up this card recently and I was planning to use it in my 486 build. It works with XTIDE but there is a 30-60s pause after it scans for IDE devices. I’m not sure if it’s the card or something with XTIDE, so I went to hunt down information about the various jumper settings. However, I haven’t been able to find much about this card outside of an eBay listing. Anyone have info on this card, or a guess what the jumpers do?

Well, I haven’t figured out the jumper settings, but after some more testing I figured out the XTIDE issue. Seems since the VLB card has an actual IDE controller it really doesn’t like the CF to IDE adapter. Replacing it with a IDE to SATA adapter makes it behave like it should.

Looks like you have an older DIAMOND FLOWER Inc controller. The JP3 settings on your board might be similar to these: https://arvutimuuseum.ee/th99/c/C-D/20492.htm

I'm glad you were able to make things work, but CF cards are actual IDE devices, it's just they have a 50 pin connector instead of a 40 pin connector and a 4 pin molex.

Did you review this page? https://www.xtideuniversalbios.org/

IDE controllers [default=1 for XT builds, 2 for AT builds]
Device Type [32-bit VLB/PCI IDE]

Unfortunately your board just has bare solder vias where I'd expect to see the IDE PIO jumpers, but if you include MODULE_ADVANCED_ATA in your XUB image (aka 386L) , it might work with your promise 20230c controller. I've had good luck.

I’m running the 386L image, it works great with the promise 20230C when I use an IDE HDD, or a SATA to IDE adapter. I’ve had issues with this CF card acting like it is both master and slave and I think that’s what’s causing the issue with the 20230C.

I might try adding the headers for the PIO and see what changing the settings of them does.

Here's an example of a promise board that has the hard drive speed jumpers: https://arvutimuuseum.ee/th99/c/P-R/20899.htm

Interesting that it's a master slave issue. Does your CF adapter have a master/slave jumper? Are you able to try using a cable that has the "blue-grey-black" cable select 40 pin blocks on it? You want the black on the controller and the blue on the CF adapter.

My adapter does have a jumper, but it hasn’t seemed to do anything in my tests… I think I tried a blue-grey-black cable too and it didn’t seem to make a difference. Maybe something is weird with my CF card

Could be. CF's have a deep and twisted family tree and there's more than one person who has had problems trying to use them in a master/slave setup. What CF are you using?

p.s. it could also be a bad trace in the adapter card.

It is a SanDisk Ultra II. I ran into many problems trying to use it with a CD drive until I gave up and bought a soundcard with an IDE interface

SanDisk CF's are really good, but they are counterfeited about as often as Cuban cigars.

Do you have the serial number on the side?

Yup, mine looks to be genuine. I found a nice resolution, pulled my other CF to IDE adapter out of a different computer and it works perfectly. I guess the problem is this specific adapter.
