I am looking at these two ISA IDE controllers
Unknown TK-82C869/865 2J D01
Unknown TK-82C869/865 2J D04 (PiC P4020, P4021)

Names are similar, assemblies are similar, almost identical.
We know UMC designed and produced(?) their own chips.
Not sure about PiC.

The PiC based controller is great. The UMC one - not so much.
Yet, i have the feeling that the PiC chips are relabeled UMC silicon.

Couldn't find anything online for either controller.
Nor about PiC.

Any hints ?

You're right UMC designs end fabricates it's own chips. And they do lots of OEM stuff as well. Mostly they're pretty rock solid as well. This makes the idea of the relabeled UMC very much possible

Stuck at 10MHz...

The fact the UMC one isn't working is odd, I've always heard UMC stuff was rock solid. I wonder if something's damaged.

Both controllers are working, but the PiC one is working++.

UMC IDE chips and based on them controllers are not good. That's for sure.
So, if this is a relabeling job, i am not sure how the PiC chips are so good.
Or maybe it was just dumb luck that materialized in the specific design/assembly.

Some of these Super-I/O and IDE chips were pin compatible. One of the "PIC" chips (or both) might be some relabeled Winbond, SMC, Acer, whatever...

Do you know specific brands/models that are pin compatible ?
It can easily be that with the pic/umc chips.

"TK" isn't exactly having a good reputation with me. So the PiC card could be less used or something, it may fail later on. Like many TK products did...

We are building a list as we go.

Pretty sure of this already:
PIC P4020 = UM82C863F
PIC P4021 = UM82C865F

I hear you about "TK".
Yet, this ordinary looking IDE controller is something else.

How confident you are about the PIC-UMC relabeling ?
Is it a hunch, or you found evidence out there ?
