Hi!

I was wondering if you could help me out with a little (huge?) problem here.

Recently I started putting together a retro rig, just for the sake of fun. I even acquired a classic GUS from a friend.

I would like to install this sound card in MS-Dos 6.22.

I have an Asus P2B motherboard which has 3 ISA slots. I tried all of them, but to no avail. I installed the stuff from the original GUS install cd and everything is fine up till I try to use the card itself.

In the Ultrasnd dir I ran playmidi and when I chose a MIDI file, the program informs me that a GUS card was not found. It is the same with games.

I even tried in the bios to manually set irq 5 for "legacy card". Note that this is the only isa card on the motherboard, the only other card is a PCI S3Virge.

I'm getting a bit desperate here because I payed good money for this card and heard much about its capabilities... 😢

Thank you in advance

What install cd did you use? The original cards came with a set of floppy disks.

Anyway, did the setup routine detect and configure all of the card settings? base address, interrupts etc? What did it leave your autoexec.bat looking like?

The Cd is titled : The Ultrasound Cd
Subtitle: Over 100 Mb of software

I installed the software which created a dir called ultrasnd. I cannot run setup.exe as of right now, because it tells me I don1t have enough conventional memory (I have 515k it needs 550) I'm working on it right now.

In the meantime, I checked msd.exe and it registers as a game port.

Ok, so I fiddled around with autoexec.bat and config.sys and managed to free up enough memory to run setup.exe. The setup configured the irq and dma smoothly.

Now I started up some games and I would only like to say that I have never been so happy in my life. Thanks megatron for the help. I think I will lose my head now. tralalalala

However..I'm worried about the beaver competition.

How much memory does your card have? You can download the Pro Patches Lite pack which replaces the standard instrument patches with enhanced ones - it really makes a difference to the music quality!

I think the card is "full" so that means 1 Mb? Can you tell me a bit about those Pro patches? To be honest I don't really know much about this card so ANY kind information is much appreciated.

I'm particularly interested in the jumper settings on the card . I didn't find anything on those...

There is not much to consider. You just set the port and everything else is set by Ultrinit from software side.

Okay, I downloaded them. I'm trying to install the 1.50 lite pack but when I do everything as the txt tells me, patmenu.exe S exits with a runtime error.

I installed the 4.10 and then the 4.11 soft overmy original install.

In the autoexec.bat I have to variables set
SET PROPATS=c:\GUSPAT
SET ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND

The patmenu exits with a "Runtime error 200 at 0415:0091" I read a forum topic on this here at zetafleet but that just told me to set the ULTRADIR variable, which I have done already.

If your CPU is faster than ~200ish MHz, it's likely to be caused by the Borland Pascal delay bug. Try slowing down your machine.

Yes, unfortunately I'm using a slot1 motherboard with a pII 400. I'm still hunting for parts for this computer and in the meantime I'm using it with this cpu. Thanks for your suggestion, I will try to slow it down in the BIOS...

Well, there is no way (which I know of) to slow done this cpu in MS-DOS. Not in the BIOS, not with jumpers on the board.

So my question is: Can I install the pro patches without patmenu.exe?

However..I'm worried about the beaver competition.

Try running tppatch.exe on the patmenu.exe file

Thanks Donutking, I am able to run patmenu now, but it immediately exits after the blue "processing patch files" screen with runtime error 005 at 0000:1CE5......
