Hey guys,

I just ordered a few things to try and put together a more solid '98SE machine than I currently have. A P4 2.88 machine recently made it's way into my hands but it had a MB with a PCI express slot instead of AGP so it was pretty much useless for my purposes. So I stripped it of the CPU, RAM, Coolers and Drives etc...

I just bought this MB:

An ASRock 775VM800 , because when I went to their website I was happy to see an entire suite of Win '98 drivers available from the manufacturer. Does anyone know anything about this board? I've already purchased it so I'll live and learn anyways but what are your opinions on it.

I also picked up a cheap case as I wanted something smaller than the machine I originally stripped.

It seems like it should be enough to run what I have with a Geforce 5900 Ultra. As long as the PSU isn't DOA I imagine it should be able to handle the components since I'm currently running most of them with a 250W PSU.

I'll be sure and post some results if everything goes as planned. This should be the fastest period machine for Win '98 I should ever need to build I imagine, and I could even step it up with a faster proc or throw a 6800 in there at some point I suppose.

Interesting... Tnx for this idea.
Intel have Win9x support for 910/915/925 series chipsets (Inf update 6.3.0.1007). The trouble is - I'm not sure about HDA support for ME (discreet sound card as the solution?) and proper PCI-E videocards support... So - my WinME system is the standard Socket 478/Intel 865PE/Agp 8x config...

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

As far as I know PCI-E is a no go with Win98se, I would imagine it's the same with ME. Also no dual-core CPUs or Hyper Threading from what I hear.

Heya got a new question. I was trying to part out a bunch of old machines to make this happen and as it turns out I only have ATX12v PSUs and need a regular ATX PSU with the 20 pin out connector.

Will any 20+4 MB PSU connector work to power my board and a 5900 Ultra? I can easily find modern PSUs that have the 20 +4 connector but I was wondering if the older video board would be better off with something specifically designed from that era in case the wattage isn't right on certain rails with a modern PSU.

I was thinking of something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Logisys-Corp-Bearing-Su … eywords=atx+PSU

Do you guys think that would work with what I mentioned above for MB and a 5900 Ultra?

Thanks for the advice.

Well, ATX12V 2.x PSUs have the rearranged power distribution (most power is on 12V rails) and may not work correctly with old motherboards (3.3V/5V as the main energy source). Or you need an very powerful PSU. You still can use ATX12V 1.x PSUs (with AUX connector).
Example of an 1.x PSU (300W): +3.3V - 20A, +5V - 30A, +12V - 15A.
2.x (600W): 3.3V - 24A, 5V - 24A, 12V - 64A (4x16). 2x power, but lower 3.3V/5V power.
