I'd like to try this Forceware version on my Win98SE system with a GeForce FX5500. I'm having some trouble hunting down a Win98SE version of the driver, however. I assume that I cannot use the XP/2000 version. Can anyone point me in the right direction of these? Thanks much in advance.

Nvidias FTP no longer has them along with most of the older drivers 🙁 so there difficult to hunt down now.
Asus still has them for the GEFORCE 3 line tho, but they are the manual type of install.

under windows 98se of course

I'm pretty sure there was no Win9x version of that particular driver. Based on what I have, you have the following options for that general period:

53.04_win9x_english.exe
ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/53.04/53.04 … n9x_english.exe

56.64_win9x_english.exe
ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/56.64/56.64 … n9x_english.exe

61.76_3dstereo.exe
ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/61.76/61.76_3dstereo.exe

61.76_win9x_english.exe
ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/61.76/61.76 … n9x_english.exe

Yes there is a 9x version of that driver.... I just linked to it...
I use it for my 5700's and 5500's sometimes.
More importantly your nvidia FTP links are actually working. Last time I tried to use their FTP everything was deleted from the windows dir.
Just tried again...
It still is, whats letting you see the directory's to get those links.

After some sleuthing, I discovered this page:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html

Still no 56.72, but quite a few releases to play around with.

Its in the link above\below.

Select Win98se from the drop down menu, then VGA.
They work, as long as you replace the needed infs from an official version.
Sorry about saying there were generic, I thought they were. Possibly still are if you ignore the root folder, inside the nvidia folder are the normal nvinfs.

Just an update in case anyone else is trying to use an FX 5500 PCI with 98SE. I could NOT turn off Vsync with 56.64 and 61.76. Vsync will show "Off," but Quake II timedemo will max out at 59 fps.

I tested with a fresh 98SE install. Twice.

Only 71.84 and 81.98 will allow Vsync to be turned off in my config. I didn't test any release in between. Unfortunately, 71.84 and above don't uninstall correctly.

I'm now at 89 fps and am trying to figure out whether that's the real fps or whether I'm hitting the 90 fps cap in Q2. The maxfps tweak in the config doesn't seem to have any effect. This is with a 700MHz Slot 1 P3.

Isn't there a utility to unlock these option?

And I agree, big annoyance that NV doesn't fix their driver archives. Worst is that most don't come with any documentation.

I found this helpful document on Nvidia's site:

ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/81.98/81.98 … lease_Notes.pdf

I think that the driver is supposed to allow you to unlock Vsync; I suspect that it is broken for my FX 5500 with those two releases at least.

Thanks, Sammy. I may take you up on that if I run into any additional problems.

Here is a pretty serious problem with the 81.98 drivers that I just discovered. The Nvidia install program deletes a registry entry that is needed for creating new folders! The "New" option simply disappears from the menu when clicking the "File" tab or right-clicking on the desktop.

Here is the fix: http://aumha.org/regfiles.php#xpsafe

Scroll down until you see "Restore NEW Command." Apparently, this was a known issue BITD.
