Will SDRAM work in a Pentium II motherboard with the 440FX chipset and DIMM slots? Is it backward compatible Is EDO RAM in DIMMs usefull for anything other than some 440FX/450NX motherboards (I don't care about chipsets whuch support SDRAM, since it's easier to get PC133 DIMMs than EDO DIMMs).

i440FX doesn't support SDRAM.
EDO DIMM works with i450KX/GX, i440FX and perhaps even some i440LX/BX boards... but I'm not sure about these.

I've got here few i440fx mobos slot1/soc.8. They don't support sdrams only edo/fpm/bedo dimm and simm.
Machines with that type of memory are much slower than same one PII/i440LX with sdram.
