I have a Nvidia 7800GS and and ATI X1950 Pro both are 256MB and AGP, was wondering which one is faster (its for a dual socket 940 Opteron 3 GHZ Windows XP gaming box).

Probably about the same on average; the X1950 will better support HDR, has somewhat better filtering quality, and potentially better h.264 support, while the 7800 will have likely better OpenGL performance, may be more power efficient, and has newer available drivers. Both are good though.

1950pro is widely better.

I had both cards back in the day on my P4 Northwood. I upgraded from the 7800GS to the X1950Pro. In every case I can think of, the X1950 Pro provided a boost in FPS in games over the 7800GS.

Though, to be honest, I've never liked the ATI Driver packages. Even though the x1950Pro is faster, I still preferred how clean and down-to-business the nvidia drivers were.

If you're going to use the X1950 pro on XP then you can just install the Ati Tray Tools package. Probably THE best Catalyst replacement of its time. Has a very minimalist tray and is straight to the point. Very powerful and packed full of features, and you don't have to install .NET bullshit just to use it. It's a shame they didn't make one for Windows 8.

I love ATI Tray Tools so much.

Guess the ATI is going back into the tower then. I purchased the 7800gs on ebay as broken for a few bucks and when I first tested it the computer would just beep (no video found). So after putting it on the shelf half a year I decided to look at it again and clean the slot connector and found it had some clear sticky stuff on it, after some goo be gone it works just fine. That 7800GS is popular flashed for mac PPC and used in Powermac G5 towers (have one it mine).
