As leileilol said, 'not a well preserved genre'. While I can remember when it seemed nearly everything had a screensaver or two dedicated to it, nothing has survived in my collection. If anyone still has classic game screensavers, please share. If it's copyright-encumbered, a pic or vid would be nice.
The SimCity 2000 desktop theme came with a pretty neat screensaver that would automatically draw a city all over your screen. (It could even use SCURK tilesets.)

Nice topic. There was a really nice wallpaper/screensaver pack for Diablo 1, but I can't find it anymore. Back in the days you could find a bunch of wallpaper/screensaver packs on computer related magazine CDs.

Almost forgotten, this was one of the best things to leave on the screen while you zone out. Highly recommended, and splendidly nostalgic for the early coin-op driving games.
Not game-based, but very entertaining ones would be Johnny Castaway (Screen Antics) and Disney AfterDark. AD was the first Windows app I've installed on my new old computer. 😀
