Nice tip on the CD-ROM.I just tried a music CD and it works:)

I'll get back with updates on the RTC battery.

Well cmos battery mod done

https://www.dropbox.com/home/Camera%20Uploads … 09+14.45.54.jpg

It was easier than I thought TBH because when I took my motherboard out I saw that my RTC was socketed.
I couldn't see it when the mobo was mounted.
It took less than 15minutes for the whole process.

So that's done.
Another thing I'd like to accomplish is to get my 16:9 LCD (MAX resolution: 1680x1050 ) running with my Diamond S3 Trio3d/64
I can only get 800x600 and 16bit color mode.
I think I need to change my monitor type to a compatible one but I don't really have a clue how to change these settings.
I tried 1680x1200 monitor svga but no new resolutions are avalaible..

There also seems to be a weird problem with my floppy drive.
And I tried 2 floppy drives and 2 ribbon cables.
I get a no ready signal (just like I got with the CDROM)
I tried formatting a disk in Windows XP and inserted it in the drive but still..

Make sure Windows 98 is set to use the "PnP monitor" driver. Honestly, I never had that issue and can easily go up to 1080p on VGA.

I really can't understand what's with the floppy..
When the PC starts it doesn't make any noise just flash it's light for sometime and then the light goes off.
And the led stays off when I log into Windows even when I try to access it..
In BIOS I set the A: drive as 3.5" 1.44mb and B: as NONE
In Control Panel I see two drives one 3.5" and one 5.25"

BTW ,as I said It was me who soldered the CR2032 holder .It wasn't there.
As soon as I saw the battery error it was the first thing that came to mind.
There was a circular space for it so I thought that's just missing.
But no..
I tried fitting a battery and rebooted several times but no luck.
Tried reverting values to default and reboot.
Clear CMOS etc.
Changed setting and still the PC reverts to defaults everytime.
I wonder though why the motherboard has a place for a CR2032 holder if the RTC has a battery..

Soldering that battery holder wasnt needed, because its inside the ODIN RTC.. And because of that, there are no traces connected to the place where you have soldered the battery holder.. Just remove the holder and hack the RTC is your only option.

~ At least it can do black and white~

I did the battery hack. There's a picture of it in the second post of this page.

Now ,I would really want to reinstall the OS

I downloaded a win95 iso from a Win95 installation tutorial video.(in Virtualbox)
The PC recognised the burned CDROM.😀

Can I do a clean install over the current installation of Windows?
Or should I follow the whole procedure in this video?

Just to note, warez are NOT supported here.
But in the case of Windows, I always to a fresh install unless I have some specific reason to not (quick)format the drive before doing a new install.

I do not support warez too but I already have a valid version of the Operating System,I'm not stealing anything.
I just want a clean install that's all.!

When I boot from MS-DOS 6.22 floppy I can't do anything because it tells me that ms-dos is for systems without operating system and I have one installed etc.

How should I quick format the drive?

Boot from MS-DOS pressing F8 and then run fdisk ?

Also ,If someone could tell me the exact command for fdisk quick format i'd be grateful.=]

edit: no fdisk ..

i meant the FORMAT command!!

edit2: format C: /s

Seems to work ok.

Hope everything goes smooth *fingers crossed*

Ok I'm stuck...

I try to install Win95 from my CDROM but there's something wrong with my config.sys and autoexec.bat files.

What should follow the devicehigh string in config.sys and autoexec.bat files?

I don't know...

I only installed Windows 95 a single time afair.

And about the wares stuff, I wasn't trying to imply you were, it was just a mention of caution from my part as I saw you were kinda a new member here 😀

the DEVICEHIGH is used to load some command into UMBs. There is no predetermined thing to go after that, as there are a lot of DOS device drivers available.

What I usually do is:

  • Boot from a bootdisk able of reading CDs
  • Partition the drive with FDISK (and run FDISK /MBR after if the driver was either never used or its a CF card). Please remember to flag the partition as active.
  • Do a FORMAT C: /S to copy the DOS basic system files
  • Create a C:\WINDOWS directory and copy HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE from the bootdisk there
  • Create a C:\WINDOWS\SETUP folder and copy the installation files from the CD there (there should be a Win95 folder there with all the CAB files and the setup executable, thats the one you want to copy)
  • Create a CONFIG.SYS file in C: with the following:
    DOS=HIGH, UMB
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
  • Create an AUTOEXC.BAT file in C: with the following (well, technically you can leave it empty, I just like setting some environment variables):
    @ECHO OFF
    SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;
    SET DIRCMD=/4 /OGN
    SET PROMPT=[MS-DOS] $P$G
    SET WINPMT=[WINDOWS] $P$G
  • Remove the bootdisk and boot from the HDD
  • Navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\SETUP folder and start the setup procedure

I plugged the HDD to my Win7 PC via a IDE to USB quick formatted it and installed MS-DOS 6.22 and then Windows 95.

Everything seemed to run fine but when the installation finished I just couldn't boot from hard drive.

I thought that maybe the partition isn't bootable so I inserted the 6.22 boot floppy and typed sys c:

After that I get Error! when I let the system boot from hdd.

I probably shouldn't do that sys c: thing but it was spontaneous..

Can the installation be saved now or I have to wipe clean the harddrive with Diskpart and start again...?!
Maybe If I start with an unallocated partition the installation will take care of the MBR and boot flag?

If you use Windows 95 there is no sense in installing DOS 6.22 first. Get a Windows 95 boot disk (that matches your Win95 version) and do the SYS C: from there.

Oh, and fire up FDISK and see if the partition is flagged as active, and also run FDISK /MBR from the command prompt to rebuild the MBR (no data loss there, so don't worry)

I cleaned the disk and reinstalled MS-DOS 6.22 and now it boots fine from HDD to ms-dos.

I find it easier to just install Windows 95 from the cd rom directly and not copy to hard disk.
Is it safer that way though?

Does the Win 95 installation somehow messes with the disk configuration?

Because I also remember earlier that I booted after the ms-dos install..
Is it possible that the ms-dos and windows 95 are seen as 2 different OSes and that confuses things up?
Or am I imagining things:p

Anyway..
*I now started the Windows setup for a second time.Hope everything works out better.
If it doesn't then I'll try fdisk /mbr after the installation.

Now,
I have the OSR25 version of Win95
Which of these boot disks correspond to that version?
http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/95.html
I believe the B right?

Your Windows 95 is Windows 4.0.950C, but using an OSR2/2.1 boot disk should be fine. Using a Win95 bootdisk instead of a DOS 6.22 one should allow you to use FAT32 if your HDD is larger than 2GB

I got it working at last.!
Everything seems okay except that I want to add 1680x1050 screen resolution.
I found an article online that gives some info.
Apparently you've got to change some registry values.
I hope my s3 64 supports the new res.

Now,I've got to install back that Plus! package!

Does anyone know what driver should I install for my graphics card?
Windows already has version 4.00 installed.
I have this exact model http://www.vgamuseum.info/images/zaatharen/s3 … diamond_fhq.jpg
It's a S3trio64 part number 86C764-P and I can only find drivers for part number 86c765 in this site http://www.s3graphics.com/en/drivers/legacy_s … re_archive.aspx

I also found this Super CD for Diamond Cards in the archives..
http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=548
What should be best?

My philosophy is to not break anything that isn't broken 😀
Though I have to admit it may not give the speediest results 😵

If it's a Diamond card and both your model and the driver for the model you found are interchangeable, then I suppose it would work (I cannot be accounted for any damages done to your home, kids, pets and your carpet if something goes wrong though 😊 )
