Have anyone here bought or tried the new 486 motherboards available for order at http://www.esapcsolutions.com?

I believe they are quite expensive, but it would be nice to have a modern 486 computer. It also looks like you can connect an external speaker to the motherboard instead of using the piezo speaker which isn't good at all.

They have been known here for years but the cost scares everyone away, some got deep pockets but no one is willing to spend that much.

I think most 486 industrial motherboards I've actually seen priced are in the $400 range.

Hah, I thought this thread seemed familiar...

$400 sounds obscene now, but fast forward 5 to 10 years...

Why are 486 motherboards going to be extinct in 5 to 10 years?

Well, I think they'll be quite hard to get, as the demand for them seems relatively higher than for 286 or 386 systems, for example. Just more versatile.

486 and VGA grapgics is as low as I'll go. I just can't imagine life without an FPU. 😵

Limited supply and rising demand then there is people like myself who are still buying just to build or maintain our collections. The pain inflicted by the resellers will be the final nail in the coffin and people will really go after anything that can reliably emulate 486 performance wise ie socket5/7.

10 years from now you'll be able to 3D print this stuff in your home.

Is this too much voodoo?

10 years from now the people who have nostalgia for the DOS era will be really old or will have moved on.

Um, why? Unless your hobby entails processing really big spreadsheets...

It's off to disk I go,

It's what I grew up with. CGA and EGA were before my time. And I'm very partial to software rasterizers. 😀

Everyone will have their own "cut-off" time. For me it's the 386 😀

My first PC and I got very fond memories. 286 and earlier is just not my cup of tea.
