its a CUV4X. I am looking for a ISA soundcard with OPL support for games like duke 3d doom and others. I would like to have some suggestions for witch sound card to get.(I am still kind of new to OPL FM synth)

YMF71x-based seem to be a favorite around here. I've got one myself. It's an Audician 32 Plus. Here are a couple of recent threads with lots of discussion on this card vs other cards:

PCI sound cards are not ideal for DOS. You said yourself in the OP you are looking for an ISA sound card. The YMF71x is ISA-based. Completely different experience in DOS. Read the threads, tons of great info in there on YMF, ESS, and Creative-based ISA cards.

For DOS games, an ISA card is usually a much better solution than PCI, especially if you're in pure DOS (Windows 98 can play nicer, but you'll still have problems with the vast majority of PCI sound cards).

If you don't care about "perfect, authentic" OPL3 sound, you can just stick an AWE64 (which has a "CQM" OPL3 clone chip which sounds slightly different) in there. I'd say that's a pretty good card for Socket 370 / Windows 98 anyway.

Are you just trying to play DOS games? If you are then Socket 370 is way overkill. You'd be better off with Socket 5 or 7 (Pentium I / AMD K5/K6), or even Socket 3 (486, Pentium Overdrive).

If you want a new card, then I vote for Audician 32 Plus too.

SB16 cards were more or less the standard back in mid-90's. Highly compatible standard cards.
Just keep away from those without OPL chip's.

Based on this post OPL3 implementations (ESFM, Crystal FM, dual OPL3 etc)

I decided to start looking into the Crystal CS4236, found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6IITanvS6Y and some others and was sold. Listen to that nasty FM GROWL. Love it.

I purchased a CS4236B-KQ and have been very happy with it.

OPL! Ay? Then I recommend Yamaha YMF-724 cards. They have a real OPL core build into the chip.

I didn't know about these - Phil's got a cool review on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_L_1tvH1Ew
I would consider this for a new retro build

Can't say for shure, personally. As they are just too expensive for my taste (and wallet).
That price will make an extra cost of 25 US Dollars in import vatt here in Denmark.
Even though stuff is sold privately, there are still vatt and sometimes import charges on top of that here in Denmark.

It looks like a killer card for a MS-Dos 6.22 setup though I do not see an OPL chip.
In that case, an AWE64 or an YMF-724 is a better choice, if you run Windows98.

Depends who you are asking... 😉 To me, pure DOS is without any windows stuff (MS-Dos 6.22 and earlier) 😁
I guess you will be booting Win98 in Dos-mode right?

Yeah, that works but it's a little expensive.

Here are some more ideas:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Creative-Labs-Sound-B … 5gAAOSwAuZX4Q8y (Sound Blaster Vibra 16. This model has CQM)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Creative-Labs-Sound-B … ewAAOSwmLlYAr5s (Sound Blaster 16. Gold standard DOS ISA sound card. This is a Plug and Play model, works great in Win98 & DOS. I know because I have one. Real OPL3 chip.)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CT4500-Creative-Tech- … zoAAOSwpLNX8pKb (Sound Blaster AWE64. Excellent card for Windows 98 and DOS, tends to be less of a hassle in Windows 98. CQM chip.)

For dual booting, I recommend Extended Fdisk. It's a kind of partitioning manager/boot manager tool.
The strong side of this piece of software, is that when using the boot manager, all other primaery partitions are hidden.
In other words. There is no other partition interfering with a Windows installation.

It can be found on eighter Ultimate Bootcd or Hirens bootcd. I can not remember wich one of them it is.

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

When you start with a blank harddisk, you boot into this tool.
Choose to install the boot manager first.
Then add two new blank primaery partitions and add them as an entry to the boot manager.
When rebooting the computer you activate each partition, by selecting them from the menu.
When selected, it will give an "operating system missing" and then you simply reboot
the computer with an installation media in the cd drive or floppy drive.
Then install normally. Just remember that Win95/98/ME and newer windows, will disable
the bootmanager. Then run extended fdisk again, and set up the boot manager again.
Just don't remove any partitions, or you will have to do it all over again. 😉

Gravis Ultrasound is an excellent card, but it doesn't get you OPL3 sound, it has its own systems. Duke3D and DOOM (and most other games from that era) have special options for the card, which gives you its own unique sound.

If you're willing to shell out two hundred bucks for it then go ahead.
