i really dont mind not having OPL3 but the reason why i asked for it is because I know most sound blaster midi sound like crap and all i really want is a dos windows sound card that sounds great

I have seen incomplete drivers for Win95 and I doubt they work 100% in Win98.
GUS is a Dos and Win3.11 soundcard, aimed at circa 1991/92 gaming.
You will get more of an AWE32 CT-2760 or CT-3900.
AWE32's in that class, are usually cheaper than a GUS. Not by much though.

EDIT:

AWE32 model 2760

No 3900 is on sale right now. I have seen prices as high as the GUS.

The board you have, should work with PNP. It all depends on if you need some cards in a later project, that can not do PNP.
You know... Really old 80's computers and stuff like that. If no, then go for whatever the wallet tells you to. Roughly speaking.

I think all 32's have hanging note bug. One other thing. Some 2760 cards, have spontaniously died during gaming.
I had one a couple of years ago, and it did sound good and all that. I have never owned any midi modules.

Anyway....
I started full throttle and the sound went silent, the machine froze and after a reboot, the card was dead. I still have it though, as it looks so cool. I was lucky that it died, because the day after, there was a 3900 on sale locally. And because the price was the equivelant of 10 or 15 US Dollars plus shipping, I just went ahead and bought it. I have never heard about the 3900 die like that, and I have had lots and lots of fun.

If you are willing to sacrifice OPL. And you have the money for an AWE64 Gold. Then consider that card too. No hanging note bug, and clean sound. Personally I dislike any AWE64 when installing the game for use with the Adlib standard. It's not bad as such, just not really my cup of tea.

I thought all 32's had hanging note bug. I kind of remember someone somewere in some tread stated that all 32's have it, and you need an 64 in order to avoid it. Am I misinformed on that matter?

Ah, no, I was wrong on that. I stand corrected 😀 Yes, AWE32's have the hanging note bug according to the Wiki.

Oh well.... I make mistakes too, of not remembering stuff correctly, from time to time.

I say the same.... Missing an OPL chip, though if it is good enough. Then it is good enough for Adlib music.
Try looking into some of the video's that Phil has done with an AWE64 playing Adlib music.
If it sounds ok to you, then there is no real need for the card to have an OPL chip on it.

There is one last option, you might want to look into. It is an upgrade/midi module from Belgium (I think)
It is the Dreamblaster modules. S1 and X1. Some people like it, some do not like it.
Running it on top of an Audician 32 card, and you have a nice system, giving somewhat the same quality
as an AWE32. Slightly better Wavetable/MIDI-solution and SB-Pro wich are slightly inferrior to SB16.
Personally I like the SB-Pro standard better for speach in Dos-games. I think it sounds more "right".

So... AWE32 or Audician32+Dreamblaster-S1/X1. Both good and bad solutions on their own.
Yet still the same as comparing apples to oranges. After all... They are basically just fruits.

Audician 32 + DreamBlaster S1.

I STRONGLY disagree. 😀
I have done a lot of research on the Creative Sound Blaster cards, take a good advice and buy the Audician 32.
I just bought another one, because it is THAT good.

Naa.... I was speaking of the technical capeability of the SB16 standard, compared to the SB-Pro standard.
Not really speaking about product names and how things sound to each person indevidually.

Personally I think the SB-Pro standard sounds much more superiour to the SB16 standard.
Going further, I think the Audician32 product, sounds a tiny bit better than the average Creative SB16 cards.
I have never had any Creative SB-Pro cards, so I can not say anything about them.
For what I have heard on youtube, a SB-Pro card sounds pretty nice. They are just so expensive these days.

Unfortunately, few titles used true SB16 44.1k/16 bit output. There were a few that have WSS output and can therefore do CD quality audio on YMF-71x ISA chipsets. For this reason, something like the Audician32 has some practical benefits in addition to the DMA glitches mentioned in James-F's thread.

I kind of wish I could do some further testing, but my YMF-719 card sounds horrible. Lots of crackling on playback. It's not really an option unless I get a replacement or address the cause of the issue.

Are there any titles you know of that use WSS successfully in DOS? I recall when I first got the Audician 32, I tried a few titles that said they supported WSS in the sound config, but had no luck getting working audio.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Microsoft Windows Sound System standard support in DOS games

I obviously haven't tested since my card sounds like shit.
