Again with another problem....

The '98 rig I was working on needed the Windows 98SE CD to install a driver. I put in the CD, and the drive wouldn't read it. After rebooting (with the device away to keep things from messing up the OS) I realized the CD drive wouldn't read any discs. It wouldn't read anything, and if I put a disc in, the activity light would stay on constantly with ticking noises in the CD ROM drive. I thought it was a bad drive, so I put in another drive I had laying around. Same problem, including the clicking noises. I also noticed the problem would still go on even in the BIOS. If I leave no CD in the drive, the activity light flashes and turns off.

Is it a problem with the ISA bus or the PSU?

Try a different molex connector?

And you could try the optical drives in another rig or on a testbench to see if the drives themselves are the culprit.
And you could also try swapping the IDE cable or removing any other IDE drive that's on that cable. It's a matter of basic troubleshooting here and with a bit of luck, you'll have this one solved in no time 😀
