I'm attempting to install the Maxtor 6l060j3 (D740x-6l) into my Packard Bell without success. However, when I have my CF card hooked up to the primary channel with the HDD hooked up to the secondary channel, the HDD does get detected as 2012MB (approx 1.97GB), made a new partition, formatted the HDD, copied all of the files using the xcopy /s C:\ command when in the D drive (Maxtor HDD) with success, and it was all done.

The other thing is, when I hook up the HDD to the primary channel with my CD drive connected to the secondary channel, everything goes south. The HDD doesn't get detected when set to auto or user (entering the parameters), and the system will lock up when I attempt to get the HDD info to auto detect the HDD. Am I doing something wrong here? The CF-IDE is good, but sometimes degrades the performance (slow commands and games) until I restart the computer.

I also tried using SeaTools for DOS to shrink the HDD to 2GB to no success either as it shrunk to 32MB instead of 2GB, but my other computers do detect the HDD as 2GB.

Is master/slave set correctly? Note that many hard disk drives distinguish between single drive, master with ATA-compliant slave, and master with non-ATA-compliant slave. Make sure this is set correctly. It's also possible that the HDD and the CD drive simply won't work together.

I had it set to Cable Select (3rd jumper), then master (4th jumper). The Slave is the 2nd jumper, while the 32GB limit jumper is the 1st jumper.

Jumper settings*:

C.S.

Master
[ [:] : : : ]

Slave
[ : : [:] : ]

CLJ <-- 32GB limit

* Going to look at the HDD itself to see if I got this right or not.

Never use cable select in vintage systems! This only works if you use an IDE cable supporting it (those UDMA cables with 80 wires and colored connectors) and also both drives must be set to cable select then.

So, I should set both the HDD and CD drive as master then, or use a better cable? I have 2 different IDE cables in the system: one being only one connector per side (Drive, Motherboard), and the other one with 3 connectors on it (Master, Slave, Board).

1-drive IDE connector

No, on one cable, one device must be master and the other one must be slave. The HDD should be master, the CD drive should be slave.

Second option is cable select for both devices and using the cable that has master/slave markings.
