Hi all. I recently acquired a mid-1980s PC/XT clone which (according to SpinRite) has faulty memory. I believe the chips it uses are 4164 and 41256 class 16-pin DIP DRAM modules. How do folks usually go about testing this kind of memory?

Is this too much voodoo?

Open the case and power on the computer. After a few minutes, shut it down and touch every RAM chip on the board.

If a chip is hotter than the others, it may have failed.

Hi, CheckIt! also had a memory test feature that would assist in this case.
Haven't really used it before, though, so I can't say much about it (I'm still learning about XTs).

Is it safe to be running memory testing programs in faulty memory? How does CheckIt protect itself from getting corrupted? (SpinRite immediately shuts down when it detects bad memory.)

I'm not sure if I can answer that, I'm sorry. 🙁
The original CheckIt! called that test "Locate Bad Ram Chips", though.
