Finally picked up a laptop with a CD and floppy drive, and it claimed to be working. I turned it on and it just kept beeping, no specific code, just a constant beeping (1-1-1-1, perhaps?). However, I found out that if I hit F2 right when the boot screen turns to black, I can get it to boot to XP and have it run normally. I'd like to wipe the HDD, but I can't have it boot from anything else, like a disk or a CD. Even if I take the HDD out, it tries to boot from the floppy, but acts real strange. I put in my DOS 6.22 booter, and it would read the disk and give a prompt. However, all the characters I type are wrong and it tries to "Abort, Retry, Fail" for eternity. Even then, it can only boot to floppy once in a blue moon. Whenever it boots to XP, it acts normal and runs as it should, if a bit slow. I've been trying to find out what could be going on, but I can't seem to find any reason why it won't boot normally, but can boot with an F2 being pressed at just the right time. It's been driving me mad for days.

Have you checked the pdf manuals here?
https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/pr … on-2650/manuals

The Owner's Manual at
https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-produc … anual_en-us.pdf

has something about "Unexpected Characters" on page 60.
" Press F11 to disable the numeric keypad. Verify that the numbers lock light is not lit. "

According to the pdf manuals, F2 is supposed to get to the Setup, not boot the computer.
Would the F11 key affect the mapping of the F2 key?

I don't know for sure about the beeps, but maybe they mean the CMOS battery has expired.
