Hi all,

I bought one of these from Amazon even though the reviews said they blow up! Turns out they do! The problem is the card edge connector for the 8 bit ISA slot is a fraction too short and so it can be inserted in the slot with pins shorted out.

Just a warning if you buy one, make sure the pins line up with the slot edge connector perfectly before turning the PC on! The PCI connector is fine as it's keyed.

Cheers,
Steve

This warning is relevant: We already had a thread here about a mainboard killed by a card like this. That card turned out to not only have an ISA connector that is a fraction too short, but at the same time, the ISA interface on that card can not possibly work, as a lot of the relevant pins are not connected at all. So don't even think about inserting a card like that into an ISA slot - even if you don't blow the mainboard or the card, you still won't get POST codes.

See this thread: Troubles between a PCI/ISA POST card and my Asus P55T2P4-C motherboard

It happens, I did some research before buying a new one and happy that I did or else could have ended up with one that was junk.
You should be able to use the one you bought for PCI but would be better to just buy another since it cannot work with 286, 386 or non PCI 486 boards.
Looked thru Ebay UK and saw some from china and also USA that looked OK for about 10 US or 7 UK including shipping.
I do suggest getting one with 4 digits (current and last) for better diagnosing and the extended LED readout for easy reading if the board is mounted in a case.
Just for reference this is mine and cost about $12 US including shipping a year ago, it replaced a much more awkward one from about 5 years ago, it included the external speaker connector and manual too.

I think it's a good thing to raise more awareness for this problem on VOGONs. As long as the posts about these POST cards don't clog the forum, it's fine with me to remind new members every few months that these dangerous cards exist. I don't have a problem with your post.
