OHHHHH. That's a proper chunky laptop.
My God, why can't these laptops stretch 320x200 to full screen?)
There should be a way to make it stretch, in the BIOS settings.
The sound chip in the T4700CT is a WSS-only chip, which will be crap for DOS games but just fine for Windows.

Any chance to hear this issue? I'm quite surprised that 1990 laptop can have a bad dos sound...
My NEC Versa M/75 has DIP switch settings and it, too, has the crappy WSS integrated, but I have an EXP SoundNote + CD-ROM PCMCIA card, yet no speakers (gotta find a way to make a 3.5mm jack for the speaker connector so I can export the sound to another set of speakers.

Right now I'm tempted to get a battery from Power-supplier.biz for the older Versas, and maybe an extra for the M & P from them. Looks like that's where my working battery came from based on the pictures (gold contacts, slightly off color, silver label). If it works I'll have a darn good battery. The one on my M/75 right now runs for a very long time, even off a partial charge.
Reliable, though? Power-supplier.biz's contact info is a very generic address in Shenzhen (China)...which doesn't tell you where they are located, exactly. No postal code, and I am not even sure where this JHE building is located (it's probably some abbreviated Pinyin nonsense). Their warehouse in the US is literally:
POWER SUPPLIER BIZ INC
CALIFORNIA
United States
Which combined with their rather...lackluster website set off so many alarm bells for me.
Let's find out!
Their website seemed to glitch out when I hit send, so who knows if it went through. It's probably completely fake anyway.

Guys, can you please help me to distinguish these two laptops:
Toshiba T4700CT and Toshiba Satellite T1960CT. They both look the same to me and both use a 486 processor. Okay, looks like 4700 is more powerful...

I wish I still had this one with me:
Was my first laptop back in 90's. That one would be the perfect retro laptop for me but after 30 years lost somewhere in a box full of dust, it was totally dead.
Find it, take out from box, clean, send it to me and I'll fix it for You 😀
Well... I miss 80/90s ... End of story

If a DOS game is launched from Windows 3.1, with its drivers, the sound also will be trash? I'm trying to understand the source of the problem, bad DOS SB emulator, or everything is bad about WSS?
The Toshiba T19xx line laptops have no docking capability and are slightly less fancy. They don't have sound. The T2xxx and T4xxx laptops can be docked, and some of the later T4xxx series (T4700CT, T4800CT) 486 laptops and the T4900CT have sound.
My T4900CT has a Windows level Soundblaster emulation, which I found actually works quite well as long as the soundcard is occupying IRQ 5 or 7. So I get digital audio and FM playing games when launched from Windows. But the performance in Doom at least was pretty poor, so there may be a relatively big performance hit to the emulation. In DOS, the conf_wss & wssxlat.exe can be used to initialise the sound and emulate soundblaster. But I haven't got that working from DOS yet.
Wow, if pentium is not enough even for doom with sound emulation what could I think bout 486 😀

Thanks but unfortunately it's not with me anymore. There was no way anyone could fix it, the computer was totally destroyed. Nothing was left intact. Not sure what happened to it in 30 years. Even the screen was shot.

If we ever get that PCMCIA sound card from yyzkevin this search wont matter much assuming you have one.
yyzkevin wrote on 2021-04-10, 05:43:in terms of MPU, Wave Table and OPL3 I am already at a stage I could be sending off for a prototype PCB. If I were going to make this for sale, I would want to get a very general idea soon how many would be needed to know if I need to buy more pcmcia frames or not, as I did get an end of availability notice from digikey on those. I only have a couple trays of them and I want them for my non-sound pcmcia projects,
So those Thinkpad 240 batteries from Impact Computers actually arrived on my doorstep. As suspected they are indeed NOS IBM-branded. I will try to charge them tomorrow and see if they work at all.

id be surprised if they worked at anywhere close to capacity.
Well, I just opened one and plugged it in and it's charging up, started at 0% and now it's at 7% after several minutes so I guess we'll find out how well it works!

Guys, count my money...
Toshiba Libretto 50 CTA in perfect condition, with Pentium 75 and docking station - 215 USD. Too expensive or good buy? For collection and maybe re-selling it in future with bigger price.
