I fondly remember this model of generic speakers, they came with different logos on them, shipped with loads of multimedia 486 and Pentium systems in the mid nineties. A perfect fit for this system 😎

Let me tell you, though that they can have great sound. If you're willing to do a little D.I.Y. they will sound worlds better than they do, now.

What I did to mine to make them sound worlds better: [...]

These are some neat ideas, thanks. Maybe later I'll open them up and do the wire mods!

Two weaknesses of mine: well-proportioned ladies and graphics cards. As I'm married to the former, I took care of the latter by catching these on ebay for a tenner:

The 9250 works apparently and I have a distinct lack higher end PCI cards. The 8800 has an unknown fault (might stick it in the oven), and the pair of 7600s have blown caps. So I guess I'll replace those and upgrade the cooling to prevent it happening again. Fingers crossed.

Check out my blog and YouTube channel for thoughts, articles, system profiles, and tips.

We seem to have similar tastes. Apart from the 7800GS I posted about yesterday, I also got a Rage 128 Ultra (just to see what actually that means, reports are conflicting as to what exactly was sold under that name), and a 9800XT.

And there's another card I'm watching right now...wish me luck in a few days when the auction closes.

It is some kind of a wonder that there are any of those single slot 8800GT and 9800GT cards alive, since they seem to collect all of the dust in the world in their heatsinks and as a result run around 100 degrees celsius 😜

Everything past GF4-ti4200 is all Radeon to me. Up to 9800 that is. 😀

One of these days, I must see if my 8600GTS still works.

Thankfully it didn't take any damage on the front fascia somehow and also fires up ok with everything re-attached so all well I should be able to bend it back into shape. Bizarelly no evidence of damage on packaging outside. Seller has been notified to see what they say, it was sent with UPS and packed in two layers of thick cardboard - nothing else!

So you'd hope 😜 tr-hr03a-minebea-topmount.jpg sure did lower the temperatures on my 9800GT to a maximum of 60 degrees celsius, but the bastard still died 😵. Also I have had 2 8600GTS cards die on me, and one of those was also cooled by the Thermalright HR-03.

Oh God, just let it die already, let that abomination out of its misery...

You should be happy to know that my single-slot-but-not-quite 8800GT died as prescribed about 5 years ago, after a service life of about 4 years. It was single-slot externally, but internally it had a big honking heatsink extending over another slot and a bit of a third one, supposedly to allow it to run without active cooling, to which you could attach 2 dainty fans with clips if you wanted more than the passive cooling (and of course I used the fans). Died nonetheless. With fans attached it would cover 3 full slots.

Looked like this:

news_ecstbo88gt.jpg

I think I still have the dead body somewhere in a crate.
I was more than happy to replace it with a Radeon 6870 which cost less, occupied less space, had higher performance and put out less heat. Haven't gone back to Nvidia for the high end since then (my current "contemporary" PC uses a Radeon 7970).

Also if anyone is interested, there is a Voodoo 5500 AGP listed freshly for $110 on ebay right now. I have one, don't need another.

Pulled the fan cable on one of my old 9800GT by accident and didn't realize until it had 112c while playing wow, didn't even miss a beat and that card was rock solid even years after. Had a zalman vf900 and a custom nickle plated vram cooler so the card was safe, even the vrms had extra cooling 😉

My GTX 460 was modded in much of the same ways and it outlasted most by far, even did 930mhz with it.

On a far away planet reading your posts in the year 10,191.

🤣, I have an 8800GT (an MSI OC model with the horrible reference cooling solution), it's been in storage for a while but it should be still alive, someday I'm going to try and fire it up again. Less than a month after purchasing it, I was so tired of the heat and noise that I ended up buying the Thermalright HR-03 GT pictured in the post above. That thing was quite massive and I kind of remember it bending the card a bit because of the heaviness.

Also, it was a nice cooling solution but had some issues: the RAM and VRM heatsinks kept falling off because of the crappy thermal tape they used (at least in my case) and the mounting bracket for the fan was quite rudimentary. I think I spent more time dealing with all this cooling crap than actually playing games with the damn card.

110 for a vga card. I know it is a rare card and everyone wants.... You know... Things like that.
I can't justify paying more than 15 US Dollars for a vga card.
I gave 4 US Dollars for my Radeon-9800-XXL (the Medion model) this year.

I agree with you, but there are people who are willing to pay these prices. From what I've seen lately, $110 is reasonably low for a 5500.
