Today I had to rearrange some of my vintage computers from a "scattered around in pieces because I've been working on them" state into a more-presentable "sitting neatly on assorted tables but still in pieces because I'm working on them" state. The building my apartment is in is for sale, and potential buyers are coming to look the place over this afternoon. Probably doesn't count, but I suppose physically moving half a dozen vintage computers is worth something. 🤣

It is! My back still hurts 😁
I had to move around some dual motherboards and HDDs recently.

I replaced the tiny annoying loud fans (seen lying on the table looking like sea creatures) on my BFG FX 5900 128Mb with a cool and quiet Noctua 92mm fan. It's sweetness indeed.

As a bonus I added blue ramsinks to the Elsa Gladiac GF2 Ultra (seen on the left of the photo). The original ramsink fell off at some point, so they needed to be cooled. Pity GF2 is such a terrible looking card.

Replaced some cracked ALPS keyswitches with Matias switches. The rest of them need some lube now.

I used to play Sega GT 2002 on the Xbox for hours straight! Those games are SO much fun, and I am not even much of a racing fanatic 😊

Does replacing your old cloth drapes with modern looking Venetian blinds count as a retro activity? Cause it sure feels retro now. 🤣

Today I finally fixed the speakers that have been with me since year 2000 \o/
They are not anything fancy, they just came with my P3 (which had an SBLive!). These speakers quite loud and clear, but the volume potentiometer had been acting up for the last few years (losing contact in one channel), but since I'm more of a headphones kind of guy I never really bothered messing with it. Just replaced it with a new one and now the speakers are back to full health =)

Heh, this is the first time I'm using internet over my oldschool build 😁
-pentium mmx233, 128mb ram, win 98 and a voodoo 3 3000.
Actually not bad, ie5 runs fine but many websites are not working, I'm testing for now the firefox 2, it's much more smooth than opera, and works fine with new pages (for now)

The situation is that over my bedroom there' my main computer (notebook) and this oldschool comuter, only the notebook has internet, since I only have wifi, and the old computer is connected on it by a cheaper router, that was used to transfer files and also play over lan (not many games since many old games doesn't work over windows 10 and over a 64bits os)...

Just saying, I'm posting right now over that old computer, while listening some duke midi over the isa wavetable (actually, I'm trying to add a vogons emote but no sucess pressing the smile icons `-`

This tidbit will probably mark me as the oddest person on Vogons, but I finally tested a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP that I bought off eBay about a year ago. I got a very nice deal on a minty specimen that came with everything, including the mouse pad that 3dfx sent out later. I just took some time off from retro computing beginning last fall and just now got around to it!

I added some scores to Phil's V5 thread to test it out. Love it!

Got my Pentium 3 dual system in it's final case/home, replacing the 5400rpm 40gb IDE drive with a Maxtor Diamondmax 16 120gb IDE drive. As many bugs and quirks as this thing has once you set it up how you want it the performance seems to be pretty good, finding a use for a dual cpu system that A: Does not let you use different brands of hard drives or models together B: Only can use up to a 120gb HDD and C: Is buggy with SB Live! cards can be difficult. Going to end up being a Win2k system with Dual Coppermine 1.0ghz cpu's (sequential serial numbers, still have the original boxes) 2gb of Crucial pc133, Medion Geforce 4 ti4200, and a Monster mx300 for audio. Might throw in a pair of 8mb Voodoo 2's just for the heck of it as well, IDK yet.

For browsing the internet on my Win98 machine I use a programme called KernelEx, and use windows 2k/xp compatability with firefox 3.6 (that's the latest I could get to work- is it down to not having SSE2 i wonder or more software releated I never bothered to look into it too much). Originally for a fair few years I was using Netscape 9.0.0.6 (and seamonkey) which'll also work under 9x if used with KernelEx, though ff 3.6 out uses it.

Oh, I just meant that I had a V5 in my possession for the first time in my life and couldn't be bothered to play with it for about a year.

I had time to test my V2. Nice card btw.

I had it running alongside my G400, and fired up some Diablo2, NFS-2K, UT99 and NFS2-SE.
Still don't know if I like the Voodoo best or the G400. Hmmm....
In Diablo-2 i like the G400 better, and in UT99 i like the Voodoo best.
They are equaly great in their own right, if you ask me. Probably look for a second one, to get SLI.

Well.... It really depends on what you are running. Voodoo has pro's and con's.
(And so, does all other cards of that era)

Really liking the art work on that box. Today's boxes just don't look as cool 🤣

A little bit retro related. Sorted out my home networking / file server situation. Too many drives and USBs with stuff all over the place. Was looking for some redundancy, got a lot of drives, but really don't want to buy a NAS. Windows 8 has storage spaces built in, it's like a RAID manager for newbies. Created a Raid 1 array and will use that for my retro home network. The data on there is not super critical, but when you've organised it over some time, it's a major PITA if something dies.

Performance is pretty sweet. 140 MB/s local and 110 MB/s over the LAN. Just a shame Windows 98 networking is so slow 😵
