I'm staying below the 128 Gb border. Do I still need the reg key?

You got me wrong.
It is not 128 GB per partition.
It is 128 GB in total.

To avoid surprises, you should add the reg key.

What happens when you remove all partitions and try to install XP?
How many Gigabytes does it report when creating a primary partition?

When I remove all partitions and install XP, it depends. When I keep it small, it just runs smoothly. When I go full size, I get the NTLDR error message. If win98 is already there and I'm trying the dual boot, I get the hal.dll error.

The Gigabytes it reports is just the same amount as I chose to it to be.

So, when you have a fresh install from your installation medium, you already have SP2 without installing it?
Strange, strange.

Try to stay within 128 GiB (64 GiB PRIMARY 98+64 GiB PRIMARY XP+384 GB NTFS).
You must not access to the data above 128 GiB with 98 unless you install some 3rd party tools like Intel Harddisk Accelerator.

I don't know any better haha. Since 2001 I have been using the same disc with sp2, afterwards installing sp3.

And thank you for the help 🙂
