Just received this lovely box:

Containing a PLG-100VL board (the exact board I once found cheap on Ebay and then forgot to bid on):

Included were the manuals, PC cable, original PSU, and inner box material. The latter was a good thing because the company I used to buy it in Japan and ship it thought this was all that was required to send it over half the world:

They didn't even bother to tape shut the box, just put a triple layer of bubble wrap around it. WTF? 😒 It could have ended in disaster.

Edit: Tested, and everything works. Also has firmware version 2.0, so it's GM2-compatible. 😀

I have no idea why somebody would even sell this... but oh well I used the opportunity ^^

Went to a computer shop that sells items from retro to modern and repairs systems from the past to the present and bought a ThinkPad docking station, the power adapter, and the external floppy drive for my ThinkPad R40 as I needed a floppy drive and a docking station for that laptop anyway for $40. Not a bad price for the items. Could've bought the Audigy 2 ZS and Radeon AGP card, but, I'll get them later on and there was a Pentium II board and they also sell those Slot 1 CPUs as well (will buy the board, video card, sound card, and the CPU someday and build a sleeper system).

Also went to a local video game store and bought a genuine SNES power adapter for a good price of $14.95

Number Nine graphics accelerator för ISA( bent like a banana, but I hope it works), Tseng ET4000AX and a Nokia branded 8-bit ISA vga card.

MFM-controller, memorycard, SCSI-controller and two random 72pin sticks.

Six old IDE drives and an old SCSI drive.

NEC Multispin with caddy for SCSI

I didn't bother with pictures on the other stuff; an external casing for optical SCSI, two floppydrives, 50x IDE cdrom, some random cables and other junk.

The stuff needs some cleaning and testing, but free is free 😎

I love that NEC drive, if I ever find one for a reasonable price locally with the original external enclosure I don't think I could resist ^^

It won't. It will look much better, but not run any faster. The frame rate of quake is limited by the 486's slow FPU (or more correct: the Pentium-optimized way the FPU is used). I have such a setup - well, it's using a POD now, but was a DX4 before - and while it can *run* Quake, it's barely playable on a DX4. The Voodoo won't change that.

No. Keep in mind that the 3dfx cards only do the last stage of the rendering, unlike modern 3d graphics cards. All the geometry calculations are still done by the CPU, and so the FPU is still used. If I'm not mistaken, having an FPU is even a requirement for 3dfx, since Glide heavily relies on it.

When I installed a Voodoo1 in my DX4 and tried Quake for the first time in 3dfx mode, it was even running slower than with software-based rendering, because it started in a higher resolution, causing more CPU-load.

Ahh, I see. I'll just stick with a fast PCI card then; I have a few options (Trio64, ARK1000PV, MX86200FC or Millennium).

If the mainboard supports it, you can install an AMD X5-133 overclocked to 160 MHz. This will give you about 16 fps in Quake with the Voodoo at 512x384 resolution.

I don't have any 5x86 or X5 CPUs; DX4-100 is the fastest I can go with. Regardless, if I wanted a Pseudo-Pentium I would just build a K5 system anyway 😀

My friends used the Voodoo with Late Pentium or MMX CPUs. At the time I was stuck with software mode Quake with a P-100 (or 120/133, I can't remember for sure). I went straight to a Voodoo 2 with a PII-300.

I think HP still has some PCs in "CMT" cases (CMT stands for Convertible Mini Tower). I had Elite 8300 CMT and it could be easily converted from desktop to mini tower and vice versa.
