I recently picked up what I thought to be an old PC sound device for 99 cents, it is labelled "Perfect Sound by SunRize Industries" and has two RCA style audio jacks on one end and a serial port on the other. I looked it up and it turned out to be an Amiga stereo external sound sampler!

Are these rare? (Pictures coming soon)

In the western part of Europe, they are rare these days. And as the amiga was not as widespread in the US, I guess it is probably quite rare.
Actually I don't know how rare the thing really are.

roland sound hardware have been going for insane prices lately online, like $200+ insane. At least the ISA cards..not sure about that roland midi board. Do those plug in to just any old sound card?

Wow... yeah, that'll do it.

And I have no idea about "any old" sound card, but the Yamaha does seem to have the same pins as the SB16 for a daughterboard. Unfortunately, it doesn't have holes appropriately spaced for the plastic offset pins to secure the thing, but that's neither here nor there for the moment.

Yeah, I bought my Roland SCD-15 (55) for around $135 shipped halfway across the world...bare card, not too long ago. I've been looking for one for the past two years and kicking myself for having sold my original one back in 1999 for something like $20-30!

Runicen...uh....wanting to sell it? 🤣 😎

Wow... Yikes! I knew I'd stumbled on a good find, but I had no idea HOW good. Where does the SCD-15 fit into the product line? Is it particularly good at some things vs. others? My P200 only has DOS installed, so I have a sinking suspicion it's not being used remotely near its full capabilities in my limited testing.

Though it's tempting to sell off since it was a "freebie" (not going to say how much I paid for the games this "came with"), but I told the guy I wasn't going to try to flip the stuff he was giving me (he didn't seem to care, but it seemed worth pledging since he was being so generous) AND I'm not even sure if it's working right. Plugged into the SB16, MIDI output is way lower than digital output AND both are way lower in output than my Yamaha Audician was, so I have a feeling something is amiss somewhere in the works. I just need to spend some time messing with jumpers to try to figure out what it might be. So yeah, ethical AND technical constraints. 🤣

The most unuseable about it, is those umb-movie-discs. No good on such a small screen.

Not really retro, but today I was given the green light by my manager to take home a recently-decommissioned digital photo kiosk from the store I work in.

It's already been DBAN'd, so the original kiosk OS (a heavily-modified version of XP Embedded) is long gone. The Everest report was generated under BartPE, so some of the detected hardware may not be accurate. The BIOS is password-protected and I have not yet been able to remove the back cover to get at the reset jumper. The monitor/video likes to randomly cut out on it, so what (if anything) I'll do with it has yet to be seen.

It was a decent price so I snagged 1 then 3 more. I have other brands of VLB Ethernet they are hard to come by (and I have a decent VLB card collection).

'Rescued' this AT case, or so I thought....

The local craigslist ad mentioned it having been used for an Amiga, of which I did not take much heed - in the picture it looked kinda odd and was happy to get a 'special' AT box...
But... after getting it home, and having a closer look, it seems like someone did some major metalwork on this one, and is not quite what it first appeared to be! 😜 🤣

Behold:

2uzymxj.jpg

No motherboard, just a humongous XT-era PSU bolted shoddily in place !
And that fancy red rocker switch at front is certainly a similar DIY job - not sure if the regular power buttons will be workable if I put in a 'normal' PSU... 😢

On the 'plus' side, there is also a Toshiba 4x CD drive, with manual as well. And a 155mb Micropolis SCSI harddrive with a superlong cable. You can see the front of the drive as the black thing above the CD-rom in front.
2ezs4me.jpg

Not sure what these "T-res" thingies are supposed to be, but probably something Amiga-related (resistors?).
14se45j.jpg

Not sure how this all was used, but looks more and more like a giant portable/external harddrive(and CDrom) with its own powersupply 🤣 !

I picked up a server that I've been eyeing for a couple of months. The guy selling it needed it gone ASAP so I was able to pick it up for $60. It's a Dell PowerEdge SC1430, currently with a Xeon 5060, 6GB of RAM, 2x 500GB hard drives, and weighs a metric fucktonne. I don't know much else about it, it's late and I haven't had time to play with it yet. I doubt I'll power it on until I change the bulging caps (of course it has a few, every system I buy does 😵 )

A couple hasty pics, she needs a good cleaning.

That thing has taken me FOREVER to find, and even then, not in its original box! Lucky duck!

They are not that hard to find at all. In box it is a little harder. They were sold as part of the Charlie Lab Megabeat One (and other devices). They are pretty common in Italy especially.

I should warn everyone about the first quoted ad: I've wasted 3 months in fruitless correspondence with the seller ending in a PayPal claim finally.

I'd have to disagree. I originally was looking for one in box, then decided to just bag that idea and get one as a board only, as trying to find one in box for sale was impossible. I rarely see any on amibay (last listing was back in 2014 i think), and haven't seen one on ebay for the longest time.

As for the CharlieLab Megabeat theory, yes....you can get them, but most sellers will NOT sell it without the entire megabeat. Getting it shipped to the USA from Italy is just way too costly, or the seller charges way too much just for the Roland itself.

BTW, I messaged that seller a LONG time ago on mercatinomusicale for the Roland daughterboard (that listing has been on there FOR YEARS). The guy is insane. He wanted almost $350 shipped to the USA for it. Though he has the price listed, after "shipping" and "packaging" he raised the price more than $150 USA. I'm not sure, but I'm a little offended that some people think Americans are swimming in cash and reprice things accordingly.

I have to ask (and if I should just start a new thread on this, let me know - not looking to hijack or derail here), where do these boards shine? I know it's supposed to work in DOS, but I'm not honestly detecting ANY improvement with the Roland board slaved to an SB16 than I was getting running the Yamaha Audician card.

Is this a piece of hardware that simply does "more" in an Windows environment, or is the assortment of Little Big Adventure and various ID games not the best stage on which to let this thing perform?

It's a GM card that is supposed to sound exactly like the Roland modules game music composers used back in the day. By the end of the day it is not "better" than any decent GM daughterboard/external module per se, it is another "flavor"
