The best use I could think of getting out of it would be to throw it into a modern mITX case and build a reverse sleeper mITX DOS PC. Sounds like a fun project but I'm pretty sure the novelty would wear off prett wast. Also not sure if that's worth doing considering I already have this:

So yeah, still haven't managed to completely sell myself on the idea, don't expect me to do it for you 🤣

I'm curious if they use the audio of the CM8738 or the VT82C686A and just use the c-media as a modem.

Mine had a red led that stayed so, but if it turns to orange you may get some juice in it.

i will try. Mine battery has a orange led when turned on, and now i'm still charging and charghing led is green. I would to change cmos and standby batteries too and check the hdd.

A few items from a local trash trader... I don't even mention price I paid... but lets say it was comparable to a good business lunch.

Both machines in nice Enlight cases (the more recent case is missing the USB ports cover, but I will make one on a 3D printer). Dual socket Abit BP6 needs recap but it's supposed to work... we will see.

I got into PCs with SMP around 2001 with Athlon MP configurations (I still have one of the MSI boards with a dual MPs from that time) but I never had any SMP motherboard with Slot 1 / S370 CPUs. And BP6 seems quite interesting not only because it looks cool, but also the crazy idea Abit had to design it exclusively for Celerons (I've read that PIIIs were never supported in MP config on this board).

Since we're all recently posting about complete PC's lately, I will add a recent pickup of mine to the mix. A Voodoo3 3000 with a Dell XPS T500 wrapped around it; 768MB RAM, PIII Katmai 500MHz. Only $110.00 shipped! The seller did a great job with packing, also. Everything works. It's shown in pieces, but I've already reassembled it after a thorough cleaning. I've already added ram heatsinks and a fan to the V3 and an ES1688F w/E-Wave daughterboard to complement the onboard Yamaha YMF-724F-V. I'll also be putting the DVD-ROM aside and adding front USB ports connected to an add-in Via USB 2.0 PCI card. The Pentium III will be upgraded to a 700MHz/100 Coppermine; this is enough for the Voodoo3. RAM will be reduced to 256MB. The NIC will be removed. I am not sure if I will ever add one back; I usually don't for Win9X.

In all of the words I threw up, you might have missed I am reducing RAM to 256MB. I don't normally put more than that in any Win9x build.

If you are still using Windows 98 as a power user and doing serious multitasking for anything other than nostalgia, then you're doing it wrong. No matter how stable it seems at any given time, one rogue application can tank the whole system and whatever "work" you had open at the time.

I'm a huge fan of DOS, 3.1, and 9x, but I remember when Windows 2000 was released as the first NT for the masses, and it was a godsend for anyone who needed to get some actual work done and play games on the same computer. Yes, there was always NT4, but it had very poor support for DirectX and many games from its time won't run on it at all.

If, for some weird reason, you want to play games from 2002 and later on Win98, having 512 MB will help a bit. Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights show a slight improvement when running with 512 MB vs. 256 MB RAM for example.

I also seem to recall Diablo II: Lord of Destruction stuttering a bit less with 512 MB if you are running it in DirectDraw or Direct3D mode. That could be related to using one of the later patches though, not sure.

It makes a difference if you are dual booting a more contemporary OS such as WinXP or a modern Linux distro for convenience reasons from time to time.

Also, thanks for letting me know I am having "wrong fun". This type of attitude is never absent in any hobby, it seems.
