Maybe I'm just bad at video games, but I've tried to do this for years and could never pinpoint someone's location by listening to sounds.

I've found positional audio works best with headphones. I've also used it with 2 and 4 speaker setups, and while it kind of provides a surround sound effect, headphones are best for precise 3D positioning.

Anyway, A3D was and still is a gimmick to me.

I remember using it for Half-Life deathmatch back in the day. Being able to precisely pinpoint other player movements just by sound was more than a gimmick. It was a decisive tactical advantage.

the stereo sound in half-life is notoriously bad, I actually haven't tried it with A3D or even EAX or the like yet, does that remedy that? ^^

I remember using a Creative DTT3500 5.1 system with a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 back in the day. I had no problem locating opponents in games that properly supported EAX.

I can't speak for EAX, but I distinctly remember the A3D positional sound in Half-Life to be quite good. It could even be used to track players/enemies with both surround positions and different heights.

Well the NEC 5800/110 Pro system arrived to day, its the Pentium Pro box and upon opening it and checking it out I come to find it needs Reg ECC modules, its got a 32mb PC66 module in it right now but im unsure if it can take any kind of reg ECC PC66 modules, being a NEC I suspect they might be weird ones.

I do have a bunch of PC100 and PC133 Reg ECC modules, does anyone know if they will downclock like normal ram does without issue ? if so then I wont have to go hunting for more NEC modules.

With the name on that case you'd perhaps be better off keep the 5.25in external bays filled up or else someone might put an empty coffee mug in there and then try to find the gimmecoffeenow-button 😋

The floppy drive seek at boot would actually add to the immersion 😂

I'm actually having a very hard time unseeing that.

And replace the OS startup sound with the sound of a mug being filled up 😋

I love this idea. The desktop wallpaper should be an assortment of coffee beans.

Just won a MMX233 and three MMX200 for 13,11€ shipped.
I don't care about the 200MHz ones. The 233 is intended to replace my MMX200 in my ISA test machine.
Gonna sell the 200's and basically got a MMX233 for free.
However, the CPUs have bend pins, so a bit of work is involved.

PhysX card and 2x ATi 3D Rage XL PCI, though one seems to have gotten a cap ripped off
also the dates on them are funny, one (c) 2000, one (c) 2004, or if the numbers on the chips are datecodes one 2005 and one 2007, seems like they were produced for quite a while even before the chinese cards showed up ^^

For the price of a pint of beer I bought these (seller's photo and description)

Intel® Pentium® 4 220/512
Intel® Pentium® 3 1000/256/133
AMD Athlon XKDA3000#

I have a pin straightening session ahead! 😀

And I have bought yet another ThinkPad (R50e) - looks like a Celeron/Pentium M but I have no info on it yet!

Well this started a conversation so that's good, but...

see, this is why we can't have nice things.
Sadly, Ebay has a quasi monopoly in their field. Otherwise it would be really, really disturbing with what flabbergasting amounts of shitfuckery they let their sellers get away with...

"flabbergasting amounts of shitfuckery" is a sentence I hope to re-use in the future 😀

Think I have a similar one, but still somewhere in storage at my parent's place. Just old enough to be 4:3 and with PATA drive. Battery is the usual but else, seems fine. TBH, it's a bit in the "obsolete limbo" age for me. Not too much use or interest, so far. I should check out whether it does any DOS with any sense...

It will be done !

Also I was thinking of printing a vinyl wrap for it that makes it appear to be an actual coffee machine.

It’s honestly a fun machine to play with.

Added a verified working Canopus Pure3D to supplement the failed one I already one (which is undergoing repairs, but I don't know if it will survive).

Bought this nice little Voodoo Banshee. Since it has been sold as an unknown graphics card unknown condition, got it cheap. Luckily works like charm, nice sharp picture these cards have ! Anyone knows the manufacturer of this card?

Looks like an Axle Triple D Banshee.
Edit: But it is actually a SuperGrace card (as indicated by the sticker on the EEPROM😅) that has the same layout as the Axle card.
