Oh wild, I guess my chances of coming across one of those are next to zero outside of UK. I guess the earlier Archimedes PC emulator thing needed a hardware lift.

Most Acorn computers from the BBC onwards allowed more than one CPU inlcuding different architectures. Amazing stuff.

I got an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 8500DV with all of the accessories.
The card even comes with a nice, passive Zalman cooler (ZM17-CU) and it seems to have been rarely used, because it smells like a new car and even the ATI Remote does not have any wear on the rubber parts.

This is amazing. I'm gonna test this thing out soon - I wonder if the USB-Remote still works on Windows 11 or if it needs special drivers to function. Maybe it'll run on Linux? 😁

The only thing I'm not sure about is this VGA adapter that breaks out into Composite and S-Video. Did that come with the card? It just seems to be a direct cable. I don't think it's possible to adapt VGA straight to these standards, or is it?

Baroque, but what was it a CPU card for in the first place? Or don't you care and are going to use the upgrade on something else?

I had this (or similar vintage) All-in-Wonder and that VGA thing def did not come with it. Looks like you got everything else though. I loved that remote - rf-based, not IR, and it could act as a mouse. 😎

Thank you!

It's a bit deceptive though, because I just shove the mess out of frame when taking pictures. 😁

The upgrade and the price was most definitely the attraction. Not sure what Epson system it came out of, but I’ve had no time to research.

After looking at it pretty thoroughly, I think this is a somewhat hacky upgraded version of a Epson PC-286 (an Epson PC98 compatible) CPU card.

Unfortunately, I don't have the proprietary PSU for the Nan-Tan laptop, so I can't test it. Visually it looks good inside though, pulled the clock battery before it could completely explode.

I found the PSU for this one on eBay! I hope it works 😀

I probably have too many old laptops.

Now the really bad news.
I think i have killed the 5 1/4 floppy drive...

Because i dont feel confident in finding the failure in the drive i destroyed... i bought another one.

I bought a very similar model so i can swap the faceplate to the brown one my drive has on it.

The drive i got is untested... wich is not a good sign in general... but it was the cheapest one for 30 euros.
Who the hell decided that a used untested floppy drive is now 30 bucks? depressing...
At least it looks clean...
I think today or tomorrow i have time to test it.

I am surprised that nobody has seen it...
But now i know why the drive was "untested"...Always the same thing with these seller idiots.
Can you see it? I feel so stupid for not seeing it. And now i need to repair this drive too if it is even fixable.

i will need some extremely high resolution reference pictures of a not broken drive.

edit: correction pictures are not enough... i need somebody with the exact same drive who is abled to make 5 or 6 measurments for me...

I don't see it looking at the photos.

Any clue ?

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Broken edge connector?

EDIT: I agree, it's really annoying to have to play "Where's Waldo?" with these sellers and their "untested" items

the backside is just ground thats easy... on top about 4 traces are gone with the piece of the connector...

my first guess it should look something like this: but i need confirmation first before trying to make a piece to repair it.

I think that extra card edge under the power connector makes it even more confusing, it's easy to miss at first glance... I wonder how compatible this PCB is with the drive from your original post, both are FD-55GFR right? Maybe you can get one working drive out of those two.

they are extremely different. the original drive has a head loading machanism with an electro magnet and the head is connected by wires also the stepper has wires.
on the newer drive there is no head loading mechanism and everything is flat cables. they are around 5 years apart.
My guess that on the original drive the electronics are toast... but all chips are different from the new one.

Yes the extra connector is confusing. its a test connector presumingly for factory testing.
one of the damaged traces goes to this connector. so i hope that i have to repair one trace less (because i dont care if the test connector works) 😁
maybe i can even cut off the test connector and use it as a replacement part... i have to investigate how i can make pcb or where i can cut off a piece of an edge connector. i also have some donor isa cards like modems or isdn cards.

Don't feel bad. I once bought two Pentium Pro boards and failed to notice that one didn't have the PAL chip and the other had like 10 components cannibalized. I was too excited to finally build my first PPro system. Can't blame anyone else but myself. Never a dull moment with retro stuff!

I tossed $10 at an eBay auction with no bids and ended up getting it. It came with CPU, RAM and a I/O faceplate. Looks like it actually works!
