For reference, here's the same resistors on my Maxi 3D2 card:

IMG_20240404_193316502.jpg

Smells like a re-work to me... Maybe the operator grabbed the wrong resistor initially and this was the fix.

Done in factory after prod, pretty sure every card from this particular revision of the V2 from Diamond has this mod .. I'm guessing they realised after the fact that they needed this resistor in place or perhaps it never made it onto the PCB designs and QA picked it up.

Yes, I have one like this too. Mine is complete in the retail box and when I received it from an online acquaintance 15+ years ago he told me it was given to him by someone that worked at Diamond and that it was (obviously) hand reworked. If I had to guess, it was probably because of some stability or heat issue that was caught after the PCBs were already made.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if there is any slight difference with this boxed card I have, considering the story that came along with it. I don't know if it was one that was returned to the manufacturer to have the repair done, or if it was all done in-house. I'm not sure if these have serial numbers, but I'll have to check some time. I believe I have at least one other loose card like it with the same mod I could compare it to.

Anyway... Yes, that resistor is normal for these. 😀

The next revision of the V2 from Diamond doesn't have this rework fix but has the fix on the PCB as SMD parts like other V2 cards.

Maybe not retro yet but I bought a new display/tv. An LG m228wa-bz. Mostly because it has any kind of port imaginable. It has scart, DVI (can use a hdmi dongle), VGA, component, composite and RF.

Has one bad pixel and a bit of a light bleed but I can live with it. It is also 16:9 but you can force 4:3. The scaling is also quite bad with low resolutions but it works. It has a game mode and in my opinion the lag is acceptable.

I might just win a 'who-got-the-yellowest' competition.

There's a Philips LMS ( CM260 card + CM206 drive ) installed, never seen one in the flesh.

This is the most yellow/brown computer I have ever seen, at this point I wonder if it can even by retrobrighted! I miss my old Highscreen "Colani" 486, and Vobis in general, they were the first real computer store I was in.

Searching a Nexgen Nx586 with FPU, PM me if you have one. I have some Athlon MP systems and cookies.

A wondrously and evenly yellowed AOpen/Acer AT case (incl. the cdrom!), ca. 1996 I figure. A little too new for it, but I'll be putting a 486 of some sort in it.
IMG_1004.jpeg

Unfortunately the cdrom doesn’t work. ☹️ Surprisingly not a drive tray/belt issue - once it has the disc, it makes no attempt to spin it. BIOS/Dos can see the drive, and I tried it on another system. I’ve had it open and can’t see anything mechanically wrong. Kind of a troubleshooting dead end for me. 😕

Oh well, toss it on the pile of drives I hate trying to fix I guess.

A 8x is just a little faster than what I’d want in a 486 anyway. And all my other spare drives are even less appropriate. Think I’ll go with my plan b and find a SCSI NEC Multispin for it and keep the dead drive in there as a placeholder - not exactly a critical element of a 486 system in any case.

Arrived today, a Delta Electronics ATX power supply and a VGA AGP Sparkle SP5200B, the power supply is a 250 W (300 W peak), while the VGA is a TNT2 M64 with 32 MB of RAM, AGP 4x I imagine.
The power supply has a connector for SATA drives, this is useful if you have a HD or SATA player, although you can use an adapter if needed.

Well, April is of to a magnificent start. VP6s and 486 are now at customs in the country (Bucharest) so in a few days they might be here.

Meanwhile, I was looking over some classified ads and these caught my eye.

Eagle eyes should tell very easily why I didn't THE SLIGHTEST hesitate to click the "Buy now" button.
For those who don't know - 7800GS and the soundcard alone. And some spare fans 🤣, because I quite need those for Socket A/370 coolers.

Interesting lot. Looks like an M-Audio Audiophile 192 sound card. So, a pro-audio\recording studio type thing. Hopefully the breakout cable is there in the lot since it's lacking most of the usual ports.

As for the 7800GS, I hope that works out for you. Cards of that type and generation are so prone to being damaged that I have pretty much stopped bothering with them. It's a combination of the weight, the absolutely TINY components on the back (with only a partial backplate) and the fact that no one cared about AGP cards within a year or two of these being released, so I'm guessing they got tossed into parts bins with no antistatic bag and little care taken. I have had so many in my hands and almost all of them had damaged components on the back.

The way people treat old video cards (which they often try to sell) makes me wonder if they think the SMD components are just some sort of grit sprayed onto the back of the PCB with an adhesive so the card is less slippery.

Let us know if the card works and is intact! I'm hoping you got a good one. 😀

(Also, the other AGP card should be an ASUS Radeon 9250.)

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

I'll make sure to keep y'all updated. For the M-Audio, I don't see any breakout cable unfortunately - I hope to find the DB25 pinout that's on there and maybe craft a cable - fairly sure that's a standard keyed LPT style port so it's a matter of wiring a header with the right cabling.

As for the 7800GS - I've bought another lot from the guy and most of the stuff worked and had no broken SMDs as far as I remember. If my memory serves me right, most cards were packed in separate boxes, THEN everything else in a big box, so I'm confident in the card having fair chances of survival. This one is a full lot (not just the GPU) so there's that...

(btw I did figure the other card was an A9250, I just had one handy on the table and it matched the photos. Dunno what card is that ATI thingy though?)

"Sold as seen". Wish me luck, I'm hoping it's just "Can't test it because there are no Windows drivers" which obviously doesn't matter to me.

I'm obviously aware that this is probably Roland's worst sound module, but it was stupid cheap and I've kind of got a thing going for optical ROMplers, hence Popcorn and the MT-D47. Kinda want an MU-2000 now, too - but they're even more expensive than the SC-D70 was (not including any potential repair cost - won't know for a week or two on that.)

Nice! Load up a Glide game on that Orchid Righteous 3D and listen for the relays to switch the VGA output over from 2D pass-through to 3D. It's so cool. 😀

I ordered this batch of four video cards, one is a 4 MB Matrox Millennium PCI (I think), I don't know if it's the first version or the second (II?), beyond that there are three AGPs, they should be a 9600 PRO (ATI), a GF FX5500 and a GF FX5600.
I hope they arrive soon, and that they all work without problems, in one I should add the fan (it's missing).

Yes, that appears to be a 4MB Matrox Millennium (1) 4MB. According to VGA Legacy it's also the faster 60Mhz version (R3).

Good solid card from my experience. There is one in my Pentium 200 MMX rig.

Thanks a lot friend, I was thinking of using it on one of the S.7s, in particular I have an ASUS with HX chipset, I don't remember the exact model, or I could put it in the SOYO SY-5BT, but I have to finish the repairs, the cache chip with missing pin .
In these MB will go K6-2 CXT CPU, or if it were possible to go below 2.0V, I would use the K6-2+ 400.

I must be going to the wrong flea markets.

I know I am.... all the ones round here are halfway between hipster district antique malls (over presented and over priced) and "vendor fairs" (i.e. a pile of tupperware, pampered chef, avon and MLM schemes) ... they suck as fleamarkets at all, never mind for hunting retro computer stuff.

Todays was good day. Managed to grab on local auction site this one for almost nothing. Guy told me that his wife asked to get rid of it since it takes to much space. Also probably did not fit into modern room design. He is not used to sell stuff on auction sites hence the price...

I'd say God bless marriage institution. 😉
