I really love the design on those IBM machines. They got an allmost perfect and flawless look. 😀

For real? I'm still cleaning chunks of vomit out of my teeth personally, it looks like my 325T if it developed a tumor and that was an ugly box to start with. To each his own I guess and they're somewhat novel for all the lock-downs and corners IBM cut in making them, though for me once you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Yay.... I like the way you say things. 😁 😁 😁 You really stand by you'r priciples, and I REALLY respect that.
For the "unique" way is saying things. You just open the mouth. And that in a fun way. 😀

On the IBM:
Guess it's about design preferences. How they are build internally, I really can't say much about.
Yet that specific design, is something I absolutely like. So yeah... Really, for real. (I really like them) 😁
They are actually those computers, on wich one of them, I played my first X-Wing game. 😜
So... I have feelings bound to this design as well. 😉

It has a tight and clean design, wich I like in so many other things. You know. Just like the roman roads.
Straight, effective and you really do not get destracted by some ugly "fancy" design.
(those low cost alien cases from the mid-00's being the ultimate worst example of all)

Another reason for me, to feel quite at home in roman inspired town-layouts. The roads are straight and you can
easely get around and by in those cities. You know... Clean, straight lines. Gotta love it. 😜

Finally recieved my 3'rd gold today. Can't wait to test this one out. Did pay for it a couple of day's ago. Just happy to finally have it home.
Now, I really need to get rid of that AWE64-Value. It's not that fantastic compared to the Gold.
(Finally I can have one in all of my SS7 build's)

Date is 9114M so March 14 1991?

It works fine so I ordered the other 2 at a discount.

Why March? Why not May? 😜
I'd say it's more likely to be the 14th week of 1991.

Just nice to see such old hardware, like they were brand spanking new.
It's like looking at a well restored 68 mustang, all original, looking like it just rolled of the factory. 😁

When OPL3 plays in OPL2 mode it's very hard to tell the difference between the 2. In fact, when i received my 1987 AdLib card which my friend keropi so graciously found for me, i tried running the jukebox program on 3 cards. The AdLib, a Sound Blaster 1.5, a Sound Blaster Pro 2 and a YMF-718 card. At the end just by ear it was clear to me that despite the OPL3 the YMF-718 was indistinguishable from the AdLib with a clear and clean sound with very little noise. The Sound Blaster 1.5 was pretty much like the AdLib but a little more bassy, which brings me to the Sound Blaster Pro 2 which was a lot more boomy and bassy.

Circuitry is gonna affect how the card sounds like, but i'd say with equal circuitry it's very hard to distinguish OPL2 with OPL3. As an example, my Pro Audio Studio XL OPL3 output sounds a little bit slightly lower tuned, almost like it was playing a semitone lower when compared with my YMF-718 card. The reasond for this could be how the card was design timing wise affecting the output of the OPL3 making it sound slightly lower pitched. The XL also uses a different revision mixer chip which could also be affecting its sound maybe when compared to earlier PAS 16 cards.

What i want to say is, i find hard to prefer OPL2 over OPL3 unless some specific setting like dual OPL2 where some clever programming makes it outshine OPL3 in terms of voicings and better stereophonic end result. Other than that OPL3 will sound just like an OPL2.

Of course, the AWE64 Gold doesn't have an OPL3 😀

It's not the card to have if you enjoy Yamaha OPL tunes. But it has a lot of other things going for it.

Indeed that explains a lot. I will use my PAS for OPL synth instead, thanks.
