Got a brand new full tower AT case! Wasn't cheap, but could certainly be worth it for its uncommon features...

I got a brand new, open box, Tyan Tsunami AT ( S1830 ) off of eBay for $75 on an offer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231621384263 The person selling them has another 48 more and seems very willing to take offers along with their lowering the price fairly regularly, for anyone who wants one.

Anyway, specs on the board: 440BX chipset w/ 100mhz FSB support, 1x AGP, 4xPCI, 4xISA, and will take 1GB of SDRAM, and I have every reason to believe will accept my 1.4ghz Tualatin Celeron with my Powerleap slotket. It also doesn't lose any of the built-in I/O you get with ATX 440BX boards, and has the connectors for PS/2 mouse, dual serial, parallel, and even USB on the board, ready for connectors to be mounted to the case. A very solid board and I look forward to putting it to use!

What you got there was the fastest AT class motherboard ever made. With a bios flash you can use a rare P3 1ghz cpu. I put mine in an old 5170 case. Because the CPU is on the left side of the case it fits where other don't. Before the NOS became available these were only seen a couple of times per year and normally sold over $300 it good working condition. I'm using it with a P3 800mhz CPU w/256Mram running XP pro very nice.
Unkn if it will work with that 1.4ghz combo I did consider it but never got around to trying it.

with 70A on the 5v rail, i'm certain if I don't use this in a big build, I can at least use it as a welder.

I have a 520W ATX power supply, one of the old ones with a massive 5v rail. even has -5v! but it is a "Standard" size, and with the case I have, it would need modification.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

This went down the list of my dumb hardware fetishes and ticked them ALL off. Miniature CRTs: check; 19" rack-mountable: check; repurposed ex-industrial gear: check; was high-tech in the '80s: check; formerly cost tons & now worth peanuts: check. Naturally I *had* to grab it.

I have some specific uses in mind for it 😉 but even without any ideas I would've bought it anyway.

I have one of these myself. I really have an itching to setup a multi-camera studio. They are otherwise really nice monochrome sets.

As I have an apparent obsession with owning the best CPU for any given socket:

Seller's photo.

s-l1600.jpg

Bought this early this morning. 6800 Ultra OC PCIE card.

There were like 5 other people bidding on it... I'm mildly curious if it was anyone here.

There's a second one on ebay I was considering bidding but I think it's a 512 MB model that won't SLI with my 256 MB one I just bought so.. if anyone missed it, that one's up for grabs and I won't be bothering with it.

Well, I bought my first vintage PC in a few years....

I walked into our little hole-in-the-wall thrift shop near my house - the cool one that gets all the really cool vintage stuff - and I find this sitting on the rack for $39.99

http://i.imgur.com/5g2oWX7.jpg

So today, I'm on my way to get dinner for me and the missus, and I decide to stop by and see if that old Gateway 2000 is there - lo and behold, it is, marked down to $10.99.....$40..hell no, but $12 w/tax - oh hell yes!'

Just took her apart and cleaned her up a bit, not a spec of dust on the motherboard save for the ends of a few cables and some light dust on the fans. Freakishly, every single internal storage device is SCSI on it - the hard disk, the CD-ROM, the floppy drives, and apparently all of these parts are original to the machine.

It almost feels like sacralidge to go ripping parts out and hot rodding this one, it's just too perfect for something this old to have gone on this long in such unmolested condition. At the very least I'd expect a PCI IDE card in it if not a SATA card if it was being used up till recently.

Here's a gallery of it - http://imgur.com/a/WxRww

Lovely machine! Interesting seeing the passive cooling.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised at that, especially considering the 486 that just loaned it's keyboard and LCD to it for a few has a fan power port on the motherboard (1995 era VLB system board).

The specs thus far are this.....
- Intel Pentium 100 Socket 5 version
- 32MB of RAM, most likely on 60ns 72 pin EDO SIMMS
- It needs a new CMOS battery - coin cell 2032 to be exact - I've got a stockpile of those (cool, it can share with my 486 and the Pentium D I have)
- All the drives work
- Some errors on the HDD, probably from being banged around
- Boots to Windows 95 OSR2 with nothing more than Office and some software for CAD and apartment stuff
- As far as I can tell, this is the original software load it had for years

And here it is.

Also arrived: Diamond Monster 3D (Voodoo 1 4mb) and 2x4mb 30pin simm for my AWE32

I Freakin' love those - that's what I'm using on my 486 currently for doing pixel art for my indie DOS games in Graf-X II.

I never knew SCSI floppy drives existed! That's cool!

I'm happy to hear that. I was hoping that this particular model is strudy and well built and has decent precision. I love the looks of old Kensington trackballs, but as I found this one locally for quite a good price, I could not resist.

Oddly I also often find I want the slowest/oldest CPU for the socket as well!
