Is that after overvolting the cpu? Or stock voltage? And at what fsb?

Never had a problem with these boards at near stock voltage and xp 3200+ speeds. My Athlon xp-m i tested briefly so that's why i ask, as it will be used in the near future and i don't want to kill it.

Also have the a7n8x-E deluxe, is the E any different with power?

... the A7N8X has pretty mediocre CPU power delivery... if you want to make sure that doesn't happen again, I highly recommend getting an Abit AN7. The DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra (REV B) is also excelent when it comes to power delivery, but they're so rare it's barely worth mentioning. I did have a couple of mishaps myself with the A7N8X - killed my only athlon XP M CPU (2500+) and one stick of ram. Turns out one of the N-Gates was faulty - it would get out of spec when hot.

I own an Abit NF7-S, it's probably at least better than the A7N8X as it uses the 12V rail for power to the CPU. The Abit NF7-S board has a single bulging cap next to the AGP slot, I will have to fix that.

My CPU was overcloked when it died but not at a voltage which normally kill Bartons. It could very well have been a voltage spike that killed it as it was during a restart. The PSU I used was Fractal Design Newton R2 1000W which has plenty of power even on the minor rails.

I remember the noise the CPU made and smell of magic smoke when it died but when I cleaned off the paste it still looked like new.

Most definitely overclocking. I've never heard of a A7N8X going bad at stock voltages.

Just came back from the biggest and most expensive haul ever. 😲
Paid €260 euro for a big lot including:
- 1x old AT big tower (yellowed alot)
- 1x old ATX case (flimsy but reasonable looking)
- 1x box with about 100x 30 pin sims
- 1x box with another 30x 30 pin sims + about 40x 72 pin sims
- 1x box with cpu coolers, about 30 of them
- 1x GA-71AX Slot A mainboard with a 700mhz cpu and ram
- 1x Box with assorted isa8/16 + pci + a few early AGP cards, mixed from diagnostic cards till soundcards.
- 1x smal box with cache ram and bios chips
- 1x box with cpu's
- 1x box with tapes for backup systems
- 1x laserprinter 😒
- 1x box with drive bays and alot of other small stuff

Will need atleast two weaks to sort everything out and clean it. The seller was a smoker 😠
Still all in all I have seen quite a few oddities between everything so happy with the haul. Should keep me off the street again for a while 🤣

That is a nice chunk of change, i hope all that stuff works! What was the main thing that made you buy the lot? (there is always a main thing!)

It was actually the sum off all things. Went there because off the Slot A Mainboard and the great amount of Ram he wrote he had and possible more things.
In the end the insane amount of stuff made me decide to take it all. It included 4x 5.25 floppy drive, 3dfx cards, Adeptec ISA Scsi cards, about 20 286 cpu's and copro's, A small box with Tag and Cache chips, a Terratec ISA soundcard with daughterboard and alot more.

Very nice! Post some pics of the CPUs if you can, I love seeing that sort of stuff.

Also, getting rid of the nicotine juice/gunk is a pain. The last big haul I got was from a smoker's home and I ended up scrubbing one tower in my basement shower 😐

Woah - that's the pick of the bunch right there. Rarer than hen's teeth!! Either you got really lucky with that and didn't pay much, or had to donor an organ / limb.

Check out my blog and YouTube channel for thoughts, articles, system profiles, and tips.

No love for HDDs? 🤣

Raptor 74GB
raptor_74xmuc9.jpg

4x 36 GB / 15k rpm SCSI
15k_sca_1n7uj1.jpg

15k_sca_2ehuvf.jpg

All of them ale very quiet and of course delivering excelent performance, no regular HDD can match 5ms access time... not even the Raptor. 😈

Hey you liar! 🤣 The first SCSI drive is 73GB not 36GB! And it's one of my favorite 73GBs! Cheetah 15k.5!
The three Atlas 15k II 36GBs are also in my favor! I love quiet 15k SCSI drives!
I reckon you hooked them to a 80MB/s SCSI adapter? The atlas has a sustained transfer rate of up to 98MB/s and the 15k.5 goes even higher - topped at 125MB/s.

Sadly, it is just 36GB. The photo isn't very clear but you can see it just below the HP logo. They were in fact connected to Adaptec 29160... however only regular desktop board and 33 MHz / 32bit PCI. I guess AMD 790FX / SB600 PCI bandwidth isn't that great, so it may be the bottleneck here. Perhaps I'll do some HDD benchmarks in the future (with many IDE/SCSI/SATA drives to compare) and for that I'd use proper PCI-X board for the 29160. It seems U320 SCSI adapters are overkill for single drives, even the fastest ones can't do more that 160 MB/s sustained speed.

Wow I didn't know 36GB 15k.5 exists... Must be a HP-customized product. I reckon the performance should be the same as a regular 15k.5.
The cut is so perfect at 80MB/s... It might be a dumb question but are you sure you didn't accidentally plug the cable into the 80MB port of 29160? The 160MB port is next to the bracket and the 80MB one is next to the 50-pin port.
