Problem is that starting with 800 MHz, Intel went from 100 MHz FSB to 133 MHz (800 MHz P3 was available in both versions). BX isn't meant for FSB >100 MHz, even if some mainboards allow overclocking. So if you want 1 GHz, you need to install a 1.33 GHz one, as you need a CPU with a 10x multiplier.

SL4KL and SL4BR are 1GHz Slot 1 CPUs for 100Mhz FSB. I'm going to test mine SL4KL tonight just in case, but I think it should work fine. The manual probably doesn't mention these chips because they were released a couple of years later than the board.

Or a Pentium III 1GHz, Slot 1 with 100MHz FSB

Good luck finding one of these. They are pretty rare. Also, it existed as the 1000B as well with 133 x 7.5, so you may even end up buying the wrong one.

Slotket + P3 1333 is much simpler and cheaper. On the other hand, why aim for 1 GHz at all? There's no need to.

1000B? Not very likely. B is Katmai core. You're thinking of the 1000EB, which is indeed the commonest P3-1000.

But there were 100MHz P3s (-E) right up to 1100MHz. Not particularly common, but they exist. Not to mention 1000MHz Tualatin Celerons up to 1400MHz via an adapter. If you truly want the fastest CPU for a given board, it could be worth looking for one. That said, I'd agree that i815 or i820 (or SiS635T) would be a better match for >=1GHz P3 CPUs and that i440BX is generally a better match for 350-750MHz. But the great thing about this hobby is that you can do whatever the hell you want, and a lot of people like to try for the fastest working CPU.

Socket 370 100MHz FSB Pentium 1GHz are not that uncommon, you just need a decent Slotket adapter for those.

Pentium 3 with fsb 133 actually starts with the 533Mhz edition in both SECC as well as FCPGA.
The 600 Mhz SECC edition was released in all four versions: 600 / 600B / 600E / 600EB

Only thing missing is the CD,even the velcro feet are unused.

For once it just works too, at least in regular gamepad emulation under DOS. Surprisingly the pads are pretty good, much better than the regular Gravis Gamepad. Diagonals actually work here.

Slight disappointment that other Atari-style joysticks don't work with the DE-9 ports, but that was hardly an advertised feature.

To be honest the main reason I bought this was as a gameport extension cord as my son's PC was just a bit too far for regular game pads, but those pads are definitely getting replaced now. Tomorrow we play OMF2097 😀

I didn’t buy anything today, but I have been trying to... I’ve been trying to find a Pentium D 965 (SL9AN) Extreme Edition to upgrade my existing D940.

I can’t seem to find one anywhere. I have found some listed for $250+, but they are web sites I’ve never heard of, and that price seems crazy. There are also a crapload being sold from China (on eBay,) but they look like, and are very likely fakes of knock-offs (one is being sold for $3!)

Anyway, I would really appreciate some help finding a Pentium D 965.

My one very reliable source (not Ebay) is out but has the Intel Pentium D 960 SL9AP for $43 so maybe $100 would be a fair price...

added: what website did you see one for $250 ?

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. https://archive.org/details/@horun

I would obviously like to get it for less than $100 given the age of the hardware. 😀

I just did another quick search via google. I see it on some site for $92, but I’ve never heard of it before, and they want $40 to ship it via UPS ground (that’s the cheapest option.) There is one shipping option of $170... for a CPU...

$92 bucks for this CPU? I think that’s quite high, especially without a heat sink... but I would probably pull the trigger, if they were not charging $40 to ship it. The site looks really sketchy, too. 😳

I can’t seem to find the site that had it listed for $250 anymore (saw it yesterday). And now that I think about, it it was actually $279 “marked down” from $379 😂

Get a Xeon 5080. LGA771, but all you need is one of those LGA771 to LGA775 stickers and to either trim a couple tabs off of the CPU socket or mod the CPU itself.

Same 3.73Ghz, same cache, same 4 threads.

But way, way cheaper.. as in less than $25

I'm impatiently waiting for the C64 to come to the US.

I so hope you will get it in the US soon. It is such a nice little machine. I have been testing it out today. Runs perfect for what it is. Love it.

Nice! I decided to go with a C128 instead of a C64. I also picked up a 1084 monitor, and a 1571 floppy drive, to go along with it.

Supposedly the guy I bought the C128 from found it at a thrift store, and paid $25 for the C128 and a stereo system. I wish I was that lucky! The C128 came in the original box with styrofoam and all.

These computers are great. I’ve been downloading old games to play in C64 mode, and I’ve been dialing up Commodore BBSs in C128 80 column mode using Multiterm 128. I also bought an autographed copy of Planet X2 from David Murray (The 8-Bit Guy on YouTube,) and that game is a lot of fun (and also looks great, and has a marvelous sound track).

Whaaaaaat? Will the ECS P4M800PRO Rev. 1.0A recognize and be stable with a Xeon CPU?

Holy crap! There is another one listed for $15!

Screw It. I ordered 2, for $30, with free shipping, as well as a set of LGA771 to 775 and “Xeon Inside” stickers. I never even knew this was even a possibility. LGA771 to LGA775 CPU “modifying stickers?!” Wow...

Now I’m even happier I got 2GB of DDR2 533MHz PC2-4200 RAM for this system.

THANK YOU! Thank you so much!

Hehe. It should probably recognize it just fine. The most it would need if it doesn't show the processor correctly is to update the microcode in the BIOS.

You're welcome!

Just make sure to follow the instructions on how to put the CPU in the socket since you have to turn it 90 degrees.. which is why you have to trim the tabs on the socket or mod the CPU.

Made an offer on ebay (which was accepted) on a MSI K7T266 Pro2 version 2.0 motherboard with an AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz CPU and RAM, so that's on the way. It's pretty much the exact system configuration I had in my PC on my early 20s, so once I pick up a few more small components, I'll have everything I need to completely rebuild that system I have such fond memories of. Not sure if I want to run windows 98 SE or dual boot with 2000/XP. I really don't remember what OS I was running back then, but probably 2000.

@Slashzero, it should do as v2 is on the compatible list for 775 > 771 mods https://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/3/#ecs

Thanks, but I have a v1.0A board, not a v2. Man I hope this works. Kind of jumped in blind and ordered 2 of these CPUs already. 😀

A UK seller was selling a bunch ofRage 128 Pro SDR 32MB PCI cards not long ago so I grabbed one, it only recently arrived at my door. It would be great for Socket 7 K6-2 builds. The only PCI card that I need/want now is a Savage4.

(I can't post the photo because the new site has issues with images that contain the word RAGE in the name, apparently..)

Reaction image posts are off-topic on VOGONS.
