Got this 19" LCD monitor for free 😀

Beautiful picture!

Nice score... am I wrong or is this monitor doing non-blended scaling? (the stretched pixel sizes seem to vary, like DOSBox using openglnb)

I can take more pictures if it helps? Anything in particular?

The screen is scaling 320 x 200 to 1280 x 1024. So integer scaling doesn't work.

Oh and I looked at the back of the LCD and it said manufactured in January 2010 😳

Not vintage at all 😀

I'm not sure I get why it scales that way horizontally... 1280/320 = 4 so the stretched pixels should all have equal widths.
I do see a small amount of blending looking at those close-ups (nice photo work!) - still, it looks a whole lot better than the blurry mess that most modern LCDs produce from 320x200.

Hmm interesting...

So I created a boot floppy with a game on it and booted from my AMD Phenom II machine and hooked up the LCD through DVI.

Scaling is much nicer now. Horizontally at least the pixels are now all the same size. Vertically I can't really tell much to be honest.

I will be looking for a DVI card for my Super Socket 7 time machine now 😀

Are you sure it wasn't something simple like the adjustment being a little off? DVI isn't really prone to it, but the autodetection of VGA can sometimes result in slight position/size errors on LCDs, and that kinda looks like what was going on in your previous pics. Most halfway decent monitors have some adjustments specifically to correct stuff like that.

Been hoarding Creative sound cards lately. Got another CT1350B, a CT1330A, and 3 more CT1600s one of which was boxed and appears unused. My other CT1350B and CT1600 are in a 286 and 486 respectively.

Ah, I must have acquired my copies of Lemmings and Indy 500 in a similar kit back in the early '90s. I had forgotten!

Yes there are two settings which does to seem to have an impact. But then it also adds some shimmering pixels. I admit I haven't played around too much yet.

Is it a 4:3 resolution stretched to a 5:4 display?

Correct! All the 1280 x 1024 screens are 5:4. I could go with a 15" but these are almost always really old models or with a 20" 1600 x 1200 but they cost a lot and are hard to get.

Can it do aspect-correct scaling? Most monitors can.

You would be surprised how few have this feature. Mostly it is found in widescreen monitors.

I have a similar 19" lcd monitor hooked up on my p200mmx and it does not have any scaling options (Samsung SyncMaster 931BF) , it only has the samsung image enhancement stuff that I have turned off.... other than that I get the same results as Mau1wurf1977's monitor as far as I can see

Many video card drivers also allow you to set the video card to do the scaling, with an option to preserve aspect ratio. That may be worth experimenting with.

Agreed! Only found out about it recently and it totally rocks!

Oh yea I'm well aware of that!

But this is no use for running real DOS games.

Ah, didn't realize you were using it with a real DOS machine instead of DOSBox. You're definitely at the mercy of the monitor in that case.

I'm still holding onto a decent 8-10 year old Samsung CRT for stuff like that. Actually, I'm thinking of getting a composite-to-VGA converter at some point so that I can connect old game consoles to it (along with some old powered stereo computer speakers); hopefully that will give me high-quality analog output (no perceptible convergence errors!) while still accurately displaying flicker effects.

I could get a 20" 1600 x 1200 screen but they are harder to find and cost quite a bit. With such a screen 320 x 200 games display perfect pixels with no scaling issues.

Such a screen does feel "too big hough" so I'd put the tower in the floor and push the screen all the way back. Even the 19" feels massive.

you say that, but I dont believe you. I'm on a 24" 1920x1200 monitor, and I think its SMALL. I'm looking at getting a 30" 2560x1600. maybe on my next tax refund...

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

For windows for sure, but not for 320 x 200 games 😉
