The Dallas Real Time Clock chip on the card - that's the battery. It's supposed to hold your RAID cache in case you have a catastrophic loss of power, but in the PERC5s and 6s having the battery go ga-ga on you typically triggers alerts or (worse) errors - in modern SSD equipped machines those pesky batteries are replaced by supercaps. It's one of the first things you check for when you get a secondhand RAID card...is the battery good? Is the onboard RAM modules good? That practice wa beaten into my head when I was a data center youngun', and what I beat into the heads of the guys that I manage - saw way too many issues from the past to let the issue breeze by.

Dude, I think you are confused. First, you are attaching my name with a quote from Vogons user wirerogue who actually asked that question. Also, if you go back and look at the post, the RAID card we are talking about (AAA-133U2) does not have a Dallas on it. Most of us here know what a Dallas is and its function.

I have never been into SCSI and especially for PCI stuff I really fail to see the point considering how easy it is to get an ATA-100 or SATA controller for that bus. For ISA, I can see the appeal, but for PCI, is it really there?

For PCI-X equipped machines where storage writing speed is more important then reading speed or size (video capture for one) they work great. Old 68 pin and SCA SCSI drives used to be pretty cheap and plentiful to play around with.

Raid on a caching controller is nice to have.

Generic normal PCI SATA cards would have the whole PCI bus saturated before the HD hit top performance.

This is yesterday's retro hardware, rather than today's, but it was broken yesterday. As I understand it, this is one of the first Pentium laptops, the Toshiba T4900CT:

Early this year, when I had brief access to someone passing through a lot of discarded hardware, I got an in-box 1571, 1541, 1701 and C64. No manuals or disks, but with cords. Unfortunately some of the accessories had their cables chopped off, so I still need to find a cable and pinout for the joystick, tape drive and MIDI keyboard (oh and the 10-key, which will be hard to find).

I think I posted some pics of the uncabled accessories at the time.

Also slightly retro is an Adaptec 16-port RAID card to test my mega-expansion for my file server - still need to get SATA power splitters and upgrade the PSU. If it works I'll probably get another card.

(Edit: 🤣 thought this was the activity thread)

I may try and upgrade the CPUS on it not sure what the best CPU that is compatible. Probably will run a Voodoo 3 3000 or Geforce 3 with it

If you go with the voodoo, the cpus you have will be more than enough. If you decide I'm a geForce 3 then I would definitely consider upgrading. Coppermine 1 ghz is the highest you can go. Unfortunately that means no tualatin.

Another Sound Blaster 16.. What can I say, I'm a sucker for collecting different models of these cards (even though they are pretty bad cards..)

I almost got a CT3900 (the original AWE32) for a mere 10€ yesterday. Dirty, dusty, bent pins on the IDE header, and the seller obviously didn't know its value. The listing had been viewed less than 10 times when I wrote him, but someone was quicker than me. 😐 So if someone on this forum got this card (on eBay Kleinanzeigen in Germany), consider yourself lucky 😉

I just read your post. I believe I got that card. I was the first to view the listing and called right away. The seller wasn't that quick with the shipping but it arrived a couple of days ago.
One capacitor is bent so far the leg is pulled out and I'll have to fix the card before trying it out. Also I'll have to replace the usual broken SIMM slots at some point. I hope you find some consolidation in knowing it got into good hands where it's going to be used and wasn't bought to be resold at a huge markup.

Today was a good day. A customer came by and gave me this:

IMG_4294s.jpg

Amiga 500, Amiga 500Plus, a bunch of games and some other stuff. The manuals and one of the PSUs belongs to an Amiga 600HD, also got the box for it but sadly not the machine itself.
He said there had also been both c64 and c128 back then. But they too seem to be gone.
Anyway, free is always welcome 😎 . I had three A500s already, but I didn't have the Plus model.

Congrats. 😀

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.

Welcome.

I already feel old when I see that such things are becoming collectible..

Is that 7800GTX an AOpen card? It looks very similar compared with my AOpen Aeolus 7800GTX DVDC512. The cooler looks impressive.

Yamaha PLG-150PC supposedly new-in-box for 86 dollars shipped (i.e. about half of the going rate at the time I bought it - the seller has now wised up and raised the price to above 100 dollars). Arrived today, and indeed was brand new including all paperwork, CD-ROM, etc.

I tested it in my MU-128v2*, and it has a lot of Latin and African percussion, but only some drum sets are fully XG-compatible. It also includes GM drum sets. However, what makes it truly useful for music production is the included effect block and accompanying preset drum sets, many of which make the drums sound positively electronic/industrial. The presets with effects included are repeats of the effect-free presets, and include the XG/GM drum sets.

* So I can also confirm that the MU128 with the "version 2" firmware upgrade can make full use of PLG-150 cards, including saving to the user bank...

IBM 750 for parts.
I have a working IBM 750 but the display was artifacting.
So I bought a NEW LCD panel for it but it turned out the display ribbon cable was bad.
These old IBM thinkpads used a funky coiled up ribbon cable for the folding LCD panel lid.
That was IBM's solution at the time.
Well , it turned out this solution did not last as the coiled up ribbon cable would rub on itself and the Thinkpad housing and eventually wear threw
the protective coating in the ribbon cable and traces and cause it to fail.
This was a common point of failure on this model Thinkpad.

There was someone selling complete LCD panels on ebay but they sold out before I could purchase one.
So I found this one for a few bucks on ebay. It is a NON-working 750 but all I need it the lid and ribbon cable.
I am going to replace the LCD display with a NEW one that I had previously purchase.

Hope it works out.
