Bought a Radeon HD 2900XT for $70.
Not a mind blowing price but these are genuinely rare (didn't sell well, super noncompetitive compared to say, 8800GTX). Took me 2 years to find my 2900GT for $55 so I'm glad to finally have the real deal.
I think it's a fair price. It took me a long time too to find mine. It was also in that range of price (it was an auction).
I think I never seen another one after that.
There is a quite cheap GT for sale in France (15€ +shipping) but I'm not really interested.
I would be interested by a 2900 Pro (the black one) but they are rare too. Or a second 2900 XT for a crossfire setup.
It's just a feeling I have, but think that high-end ATI cards are much harder to find than nVidia counterparts. (I'm mostly an ATI collector, so I may have a distorted feeling)
- Fury MAXX. Rare and hard to find at a good price (<$300)
- Radeon (7200). Easy to find SDR version. I never seen a lot of DDR versions.
- Radeon 8500. Hard to find a non LE / non DV / non AIW version. LE and non LE are exactly looking the same (try to spot the differences here : https://retro.user-unfriendly.net/Pictures/Ra … %20vs%208500LE/)
- Radeon 9700 pro are rare in working conditions because of their flawed cooling design. (I personally consider the 9700 more significant for a collection. But if you prefer a 9800xt, they don't die because of their cooling, but they were made in smaller quantities, so expensive as well)
- X850 XT. I see some quite often, so probably not super rare. (but the XT PE are hard to find)
- X1950 XT are probably not super rare either, but the XTX are not encountered often.
- HD2900 XT are difficult to find because GTX8800 were far better. So it was a commercial failure.
- HD3870x2 also rare also because of GTX8800
- HD4870x2 are less rare I think. Because they were better than nVidia 9xxx seriescand competitive with GTX2xx. Big ATI commercial success.
- HD 5970 can be found without much trouble because it's not retro yet (and also commercially successful because competitive with GTX2xx/4xx)
- HD 6xxx are AMD branded. So out of my collection scope.
I have the feeling that ATI is less collected by retro enthusiasts, but less available too. So instead of fighting with other potential Nvidia buyers, you just struggle to find the card itself.
Not sure if y feeling is correct. What do you think?
Well i am so pissed and mad the Radeon HD2900XT i found was brand new new-old stock and for dirt cheap 25 euros, but the box they gave me with the printed name Radeon HD2900XT, inside was some low profile garbage, some fucker/ SCUMbag did replace the card FUCK him, i am so mad......
I think true collectors collect all good stuff like myself.. But on other hand i am not too sure about the other collectors... People i see in you tube like Pixel Pipes, the polish collector (retro hardware) they have Ati cards such as Fury MaXX, Radeon 9700 Pro, 9800XT, x1950 XTX and Radeon HD2900XT ect... But most collectors yes they will focus only on the more exotic ATi cards or on the Legendary ones such as Fury MaXX, 9700 Pro, 9800XT ect, but not on the rest cards... nVIDIA card are hard to find as well.. I seems cant get my hands on GF TI4600 from years locally.. No matter i saw like 2-3 of them, but bad luck i guess... GEforce 6800 Ultra is also VERY rare, but i managed to find one working even !!.. GEforce 7800 AGP version is also rare and 7900 too.. FX 5950 Ultra i have seen only 2 so far and they are the card i own nothing else, rest are only 5900XT from time to time, so ALSO rare.. Same goes for GEforce 3 TI500, never have seen one here, TI200 pops from time to time, and the clean GF3 non TI is also very rare, but i managed to strike one...
GEforce 2 Ultra i know only 1 guy that has one, never saw another for sale... GEforce 256 shows from time to time...
But one thing is for sure everyone gets excited when he sees/ hear the 3Dfx name or see card with that logo... They wont get as excited when they see even rare/ exotic nVIDIA or ATi card... For me everything is exciting, since i like all high end/ exotic HW no matter what (and consider that i am very big Hater of both Intel and nVIDIA, as companies they are scum), since they are cool as well... But my main rule is, keep ONLY stuff in mint/ factory condition, and if there is only 1 piece collect it, and replace it, when i get factory state part...
I am primary ATi/ AMD collector, but i am also mostly GPU, CPU and audio cards collector and everything that is rare and exotic...
Very nice conversation u started here, and the other Abandoned guy too...

9800XT most certainly DO cook themselves. They just don't cook the GPU core, instead they cook the insuffeciently cooled BGAs on the memory chips.
Going down that list:
Fury MAXX: Haven't been able to source one. Not willing to pay more than $150 for one.
(Adding this one) Radeon R6 DDR 64MB: The original launch model radeon. Not expensive (<$50) but hard to find because of the non descriptive name. The SDR and 32MB variants are really common
Radeon 7200 DDR: I have at least 2 7200s, not sure if either is DDR. I need to start making notes of memory type, not just capacity on my spreadsheet
Radeon 8500: I actually need to prioritize getting this in at least some form
Radeon 9700: I have one that is extremely broken. Missing multiple capacitors and resistors. I haven't actually laid hands on it in a couple years, next time I dig it out I'll probably order the shit it needs from digikey.
(adding this one) Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB 256-bit: I have one of these, and I didn't even know it was rare for the longest time. Has a different cooler and everything. GPU-Z confirms its a full 256-bit bus with 256MB of Samsung memory.
X850 XT PE: I bought a NOS PCIe x850PE from a eBay vendor for $55 about 2 years ago.
X1950XT: Don't have one, not rare though. I do have a X1900XTX though which has the same core configuration but slower clock and memory speeds. The 1800XT is also rare. It wasn't sold very long.
2900XT: I have a 2900GT and now an XT. I'd grab that GT honestly, its not a weakling and it does run the Ruby Whiteout tech demo fine.
3870X2: Yeah these are hard to find and they fail all the time
4870X2: They sold better, but have the same problem of having twice as many points of failures. I have one but it has white line artifacts in BIOs.
5870X2: Still pretty cheap and available, but same problem as above. I have one that I got for free, but I don't know if it works because its too long to fit in any case I have AND it has no cooling fan.
The fact that Radeon 9800XT cook its mem chips is not good to hear... So if i get an 9800XT and change the cooler, or add pads/ paste will fix that ?
As ATi/ Radeon collector i have found these cards over the years:
ATI EGA Wonder 480 (OYY SHIT i am so fucking mad, i was about to add this early ATi card, and i was UNable to do so, since the fucking seller was an retard, the deal between us was, he wanted 20 euro i said ok i will buy it, but does the card work, and he was slow to answer, and then 3 hrs later he told me, the card is sold, and i was like WTF.....)
ATi Mach 64 2MB ISA - found it along with lot of parts, the whole lot costed me like 25 euro + x2 AM2+ mobos and MFM controller, but there was 3Dfx Voodoo 1, Compaq DeskPRO and ABIT BP6, and working (YES working no bad sectors even) Quantum BIGfoot..
ATi Mach 64 PCI - got this for free, the guy did not need the lot he gave me, and was going to trow them away, if i wont get them..
ATi Rage II+DvD PCI (made in Canada) - another giveaway from a guy that dont need old tech..
ATi Rage 128 AIW - got this from trade i gave x2 2GB DDR2, and got this card with cable and original ATi disk + 3Dfx Voodoo 1 and some crappy cards bonus.
ATi Rage 128 Pro AIW - not sure where this came from, i think some lot i got for cheap..
ATi Rage Ultra - got this as bonus when spend 20 euro for other parts..
ATi Rage Fury MaXX - well saw this card like 3 times, in a collector, for sale for 15 fucking euros, but i was 2 hours late, i am still mad about this but ehh at least i got cheap Voodoo 5, and another card in another collector..
ATi Radeon RV100 - got this for free, when did purchase brand new MSI Diamond socket 939 (sadly is not the original Radeon, but cut down..)
ATi Radeon 7500LE - is best i have from that series got for free from a guy that did not need it, could not land an Radeon 8500, but i saw one in not good condition i did buy for a colleague collector, and other LE and crap editions.
ATi Radeon 9000 Pro - did buy this from 10 euro or less
ATi Radeon 9700 Pro - saw one or 2 of these, but the seller was moron, could not lower the price below 25 euro for UNtested, so i did pass, and saw one dead...
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB/ 256 bit - got this for free, but its price originally was like 8 euro i think...
ATi Radeon x800XT Platinum AGP - got this for 13 euro with installed Zalman cooler.
ATi Radeon x850XT Platinum AGP - got this for a trade, i did gave DELL wireless combo mouse/ keyboard, that did miss the USB receiver.
ATi Radeon x1950 Pro AGP - got this for 8 euro
ATi Radeon x1950XTX Crossfire Edition - got this bundle with EnermaX 300W PSU for total of 15 or 20 euro... Later i sold the EnermaX for 17 euro, so the card is for free.
ATi Radeon HD2600 Pro AGP - got this for 10-15 euro from a seller..
ATi Radeon HD2900XT - well i am mad at this, since it was old-new stock from some old computer store, it was 25 euro, problem is, the moment when i did go to buy the card, they find the box with printed Radeon HD2900XT tag give me the box to see the card, i open, and what to see some small SHIT low profile card FUUUUUUUU i was so sad and mad, someone have replaced the card CURSE him, he mess with my ATi/ Radeon collection fucker.. I bet now the card is on the garbage and destroyed looong time ago.. While if he did not touch the precious card with his filthy hands, i was going to preserve the card in the collection, where it belongs, but ehhh what can be done...
ATi Radeon HD3650 AGP - got this from a trade, i gave up some newer card was like GEforce 630 PCIe or something like that..
ATi Radeon HD3850 AGP - got this as a bundle from trade i gave 500GB Hitachi SATA, and the seller did send this card (it is the infamous HIS IceQ III model), Mobile Athlon XP-M 2600+ and dead ABIT NF7 🤣...
ATi Radeon HD4870 - full boxed ASUS edition got it for free, the guy did not need it for some reason 🤣... Sadly is 512MB tho..
ATi Radeon HD4870 x2 - got one for free long time ago dead sadly..
And newer models
AMD Radeon R9 280x (HD7970) - both VaporX and Toxic. long story, but i got in the mining boom in 2021 x3 big boxes containing like 120+ old former mining Radeon cards mostly HD7950 and other R9 280x.. I sold them, so these ones i left for me, so dont think i did pay a penny for them...
AMD Radeon R9 290 TriXX - got this card for free, the colleague said the card is very UNstable, and crashes, and from x2 PC repair shops said the card is fine, but when he tested it on x2 systems, and on a system of his friend the card was just not working well.. And yes the card was a mess, did not have artifacts and stuff, but did crash desktop viber, games after short time.. How i did fix it, well setting low fans and GTA V, and cook the card itself in 91c for multiple hours, now the card works great...
I dont consider the AMD Radeons to be for the collection, since is ATi and Radeon, BUT i got them anyway so yeah... I also used to collect up to the last AGP card, as i started collection ONLY the every AGP card i can get... But nowadays i collect everything that is high end/ exotic (i used anyway to collect only socket 462, then someone did give me for free whole Slot 1 HP Vectra, and the rest is history as they say.. Guess i will just collect as many high end cards i can find... I wonder why no one mentions from u 2 the pre Radeon series, sure they may not be interesting but still... bunch of pre Radeon cards cant harm, (aside form the Fury MaXX).
But yes many of these cards are hard to find, specially the rare models..
