Specifically about DoX-1 and DoX BoX?

http://miditemp.de/miditempinhalt/soundmodule/dox1.php
Most recent wavetable daughterboard that i know.
Based on Korg Triton Classic (32mb ROM). Here also MP3 examples.

http://miditemp.de/miditempinhalt/soundmodule … 9aca0c13407.php
External enclosure for DoX-1 and waveblaster compatible daughterboards at all. Imho, ideal solution for adding GM daughterboards to soundcards which lacks WB connector but have quite noiseless line-in (AWE64 Gold and etc.)

Have someone got this stuff?

I'm really interested in DoX-BoX and plan to order it.
Afaik, the only solution on the market. This new "home" will replace my current handmade enclosure.

It's quite expensive and I wonder how much better it will sound than an equal or even less expensive (older though) more versatile roland/yamaha/korg sound module.
The external casing looks nice although that also is a bit on the expensive side compared to what one can build him/herself.

Look at the back of the SBox III.
I know what all the ports do but I really wonder about this "MIDI TRUE" port. 🤣

Did you order it by now?
If so I would appreciate a review...

And i was looking for the "MIDI FALSE" port but couldn't find one! Isn't that a bit illogical? 😅

Anyway, that DoX-BoX thing is not cheap! It matches the DB at 1/5th the price i guess. Personally i'd double the amount of the BoX price to get me an SC-88/VL shipped instead.

I'm new to synths, but is that DoX-1 DB really much better than a Roland GM or Yamaha, aleksej, and on what? Or are you going to use it for things other than old games as well?

Not yet, but now i want DoX-in-the-BoX, not DoX-BoX alone and plan my budget for it. Maybe in October, i hope.

I a not a musician. I like many of you just a fan of retro games and retro hardware especially various sound/midi stuff. I do not know for sure and i can only guess how it sounds in comparison with famous Roland & Yamaha synths but anyway i ready to spend not so little money for this one and just for fun (first for my favorite games).

I've just listened to some of these samples on http://www.crossfire-designs.de/index.php?lan … ards&print=true

The drums on the Yamaha (at least on Descent) sound much better than on the other sound cards! At first i wasn't sure that i like it because on the whole it sounds brighter than, say, the SCC version, but through the middle it gets clear that the Yamaha version is the most... groovy, er.. enjoyable, for lack of words. The Roland versions are kind of muted. On that particular Descent tune.

So i came to an assumption that there is no "best overall" synthesizer but rather "best instrument set or particular instrument", "best for particular title or composition" or even "best suited to one's mood or taste"! And even what one consider as sounding 'wrong' might be preferred by the next guy.

As for KORG, maybe they have the best organ sounds?

At my request, they did a few examples how DoX-1 sounds. Sorry guys, only DOOM I/II tunes here (E1M2, E1M4, E1M8, MAP02, MAP05).

Interesting stuff, a 10 for the looks.
I wonder wheter you can plug in any other midi daughterboard instead of the DoX-1, which would depend on the availability of a -12 Volt line.

I see the website states E 600,- for the lot! Did you have to pay the official price for it?

I know nothing about possible -12V requirement but i have tested box itself with following daughterboards:
Roland SCB-55
Creative Waveblaster II CT1910
Turtle Beach Rio
Terratec Profimedia GSWave
Korg Audio Gallery AG-WB
All these cards works just fine. My Yamaha DB50XG is busy right now in another setup but i see no reason for possible issues with it.

Bought it brand new for 350 euro on german ebay.

I just tested that without -12V the Roland's will give no sound, So then there must be +12V to -12V converter circuitry inside the DoX-box. I cannot see it on the photos though because the DoX-1 obscures it.
I made such a voltage converter myself once, for use in my Midi DB adapter. But it only gave -11 Volt and as it worked with an oscillator it caused a slight high pitch noise in the music... Scrapped it, and now just pull -12V from the computer power supply. 😒

That is a much better price!

I'll make such a photo if you need it.

My previous handmade adaptor looks much simplier than DoX-1 but works ok with SCB-55 and all others too.

Hmm, should I now conclude that you were a seller and/or designer of your own midi daughterboard adapters? But then how come you did not know about the -12 volt thing? 😕

How does it sound - I mean the case / box? Is it noisy?

As you know you can get the pure dox box ( without dox-1 daughterboard) for around €90,-. So this would be an interesting external alternative to soundcards with wavetable header.

I use this: my little Midi box

But it lacks the volume control. The SNR of the MPU-401 AT is good to very good.
