I am testing a Winbond 16-bit ISA IO controller, in an Asus P2B mobo. The BIOS HDD auto detection feature can see the HDD OK, but won't boot from it. The error message is - DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK...

The FDD works, and I think the serial ports are OK. I'm fairly sure all of the IO card's jumpers are set OK.

Did you disable onboard IDE and set IRQ14 to Legacy ISA?

Yes, I can confirm this. I also tried a 2nd HDD, a much older one, but that failed to boot up too. The BIOS auto HDD detection feature worked fine for this 2nd HDD. But it won't boot - strange.

I've just retested the ISA-based IO controller - this time I put it inside a G486VPA 486 board. I put the IO card in to the VLB slot. Interestingly, the HDD boots up fine. 😀
